FAC Weekly Update
September 15, 2023
Good Afternoon, FAC Family
What a great week at the FAC! We started out with an amazing recital by Sarah Jane McMahon, the artist-in-residence for the FAC Voice Studio. Ms. McMahon worked with our students during their class periods on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week, and the experience was truly transformative for our students. We also inducted the 2023 class of the Tri-M Music Honor Society on Tuesday evening. Congrats to all of our new members! Finally, in all of our studios the students continue to grow as artists; challenging themselves through meeting deadlines, taking on difficult projects, and exploring new media.
Here's the latest from the halls of the FAC...
This Week's Student Leadership Lesson
How to do hard things, being resourceful, and the value of simplicity
Quotes of the Week, from James Clear
"The odds increase, the more you try."
"Arguably the most important skill is controlling your attention. This goes beyond merely avoiding distractions. The deeper skill is finding the highest and best use for your time, given what is important to you. More than anything else, controlling your attention is about being able to figure out what you should be working on and identifying what truly moves the needle."
"When you're doing something hard, focus on the fun part.
Many people make a subtle mistake, which is they emphasize how difficult it is to do something. They tell themselves writing is hard or running is hard or math is hard. And so on. The dominant thought in their mind is that this is hard to do.
And it is true these things (and many others in life) can be challenging.
Meanwhile, people who thrive in a given area are often emphasizing a completely different aspect of the experience. They are thinking about how it feels good to move their body rather than telling themselves exercise is hard. Or, perhaps, they aren't really thinking much at all. They may slip into a trance during their run, a meditative rhythm."
But what they are almost certainly not doing is repeating a mental story about how hard it is to do the thing. Their dominant thought is about some element of the experience they enjoy. They are working hard, but with the fun part in mind."

FAC Wish List
Greenville County Schools provides us with a generous budget that allows us to meet the educational needs of our students and faculty. However, as a pre-professional training ground for aspiring artists, we will at times need to augment what we are given in order to meet professional industry standards. Unrestricted donations to the Fine Arts Center Partners are always welcome, though we know that some community members prefer to give towards specific needs. For that reason, we have created the FAC Wish List.
Please click on the following link to access the list: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Wr_aHAWv3NUTw1e3Oqzb8lUAs6u3zRNXdUPiU24c7Es/edit?usp=sharing. You can donate funds to the FAC Partners for the purchase of an item on the Wish List, thereby gaining the tax benefit of giving to a 501c3 Non-Profit.
This document will be updated regularly. Please reach out to Mr. Popat with any questions.
