Family Update
Week of October 28, 2024
Message from the Principals
Skyline Family-
As October draws to a close, we're excited for the Halloween season and Fall festivities. With these celebrations, we also want to ensure that everyone enjoys the occasion safely and respectfully, so please take note of our guidelines for Halloween costumes at school. We'll be celebrating with fun activities in some classes, and students are encouraged to show their school spirit by dressing up in school-appropriate costumes on Halloween day.
Halloween Costume Guidelines
To keep our celebrations fun and appropriate, we ask that all costumes meet the following expectations:
- No Masks or Face Coverings: Please remember that no face masks or costume masks are allowed on campus.
- No Toy Weapons or Inappropriate Props: Costumes must be safe and free from any toy weapons or props that could distract or pose safety concerns.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Costumes should be free from any elements of cultural appropriation. Let’s honor the diversity within our school community by being respectful of all cultures.
- School-Appropriate Costumes: Costumes should reflect our school’s values, avoiding any offensive language, graphics, or attire.
With these guidelines in place, we look forward to a memorable, inclusive Halloween experience for all. Let's make this Halloween season one that brings our community together in joy, creativity, and respect.
Remember: Dressing up is all about expressing yourself in a way that uplifts and respects everyone in our community. Let's make this a time where we all feel welcomed and safe.
In addition to Halloween, we’re also excited to recognize Diwali, the Festival of Lights, celebrated by many around the world and within our school community. Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. This vibrant celebration brings families together to enjoy festive lights, delicious food, and moments of gratitude and reflection. To our students and families celebrating Diwali, we wish you a joyful, prosperous, and safe celebration. Let's take this time to honor the diversity within our community and learn about the many traditions that make our school a welcoming place for everyone.
Here’s to a fantastic week ahead. Together, let’s build a school environment where everyone feels valued and celebrated. Have a great Halloween, and let's stay safe and show our Eagle pride!

Mocha Doing What Humans Cannot
Mocha - Skyline's Therapy Dog
[The following is a staff member's account describing an interaction between Mocha and one of Skyline's students.]
Yesterday afternoon, I took Mocha outside, and saw that our special education students were walking around the track during their physical education class. Mocha and I made our way over to the track, but as we arrived, the class was finishing their walk and began heading back inside. However, one of our non-verbal students remained. Two of Skyline's Teaching Assistants were encouraging her to walk back into the building, but she sat on the track, refusing to get up. At a bit of a loss, they asked if Mocha could help encourage the student to return to the school. We walked over to the young lady, I extended to her the handle of the leash, and asked whether she wanted to walk Mocha back inside; but she paid me no attention. Because the girl was sitting on the track, her head was at the same level as Mocha's. It just so happens that Mocha is also non-verbal, so Mocha looked into the girl’s eyes, presumably to reassure her that everything was going to be okay, but who can say what was shared between their eyes. The girl then leaned forward, touched her nose to Mocha's, and became visibly excited! She then stood, and slowly walked beside Mocha back into the building. As a mere observer of this experience, I can only crudely relay to you what occurred; we cannot comprehend the joy, value, or meaning that this interaction brought to this student; that will forever remain between she and Mocha.
