East Elementary
November 2024
East Elementary PTO
DID YOU KNOW… There is a reason this organization starts with a ”P”. We have one of the largest and most active PTO’s in the district because you guys (parents, grandparents, step-parents, foster parents… the people who do ALL the parenting things) SHOW. UP. for these kids and East. You’re even bothering to read this!
That’s why the PTO tries their best to serve parents too. So this year we’ve asked teachers from across the grade levels to present at our PTO meetings. In September teachers shared information on reading methodology, test scores, and even translated some of the acronyms and terms we parents see everyday… but may not always understand. We received great feedback and will host another group of teachers to discuss TECH in the classroom in our Tuesday, November 12th meeting. So if you’re curious about what tech looks like in the classroom -- show up to this meeting!
For many the #1 theme of November is being THANKFUL. The PTO is all about the teachers and students of East, but we are also super grateful for PARENTS! We’ll do our best to continue to serve you and hope you continue to show-up.
Again, the next opportunity for both is at our PTO Meeting on Tuesday, November 12th at 5:30pm. Childcare will be provided.

News from the Nurse
November is here! You have all helped keep our school healthy by monitoring for illness at home and keeping your children home if they are sick. With November comes cold days and the need to bundle up more. Please send your child/children to school with coats and hats. I have a limited supply of extra coats and can’t promise to have one if your child forgets theirs. If your child's coat is missing, have them check the lost and found. Putting your child’s name in their coat can help keep it from getting lost.
The school nurse office is in need of boys and girls underwear- size 6-8. If you have any you can donate we would appreciate it!!!
Don’t forget to clean those water bottles daily (hot water and soap) to prevent strep infection! and continue to WASH YOUR HANDS (that is the BEST way to prevent infection)!!!
LICE!!!!! We wanted to make sure everyone was aware that IF you would receive a notice, the dreaded lice letter, in your child's backpack to please check their head. Furthermore, it is also a good idea to periodically check your child for head lice (the earlier lice is discovered the easier it is to get rid of!). What if your child has it? Please alert the nurses, Tosha and Theresa, so we can help! We want to prevent the spread of lice, and we can only do that if we are aware that your child has it. Click Here for JR2’s protocol on head lice.
Please continue to screen your child before school, and keep your child home if they are sick. Remember, our policy is 24 hours free of vomiting, diarrhea, and fever (without fever-reducing medication in 24 hours). Other symptoms need to be improved in 24 hours before your child can return. Please do not give Motrin/Tylenol to your child before school if they are not feeling well because it can mask a fever (the medication takes the fever away so it is unknown whether your child has a fever 4-6 hours after taking the medication). Jackson R2 considers a temperature of 100.1 or higher as a fever.

Mrs. Moyers’ Message
Emotional intelligence (or EQ) may be a term that you’ve come across in the news or in your social media feed. Emotional intelligence refers to a person’s ability to recognize, understand, express, and manage his/her emotions. While academic intelligence is absolutely important, emotional intelligence is equally important. In fact, there is research that suggests a person’s EQ is twice as strong of a predictor of future success in relationships and careers than their IQ.
A great way to help foster emotional intelligence in your student is to model it for your child. Naming your feeling, talking about what happened to bring that feeling on, expressing the feeling in a safe, healthy way, and then managing the feeling is a powerful teaching tool. One strategy we teach students at school is to use an “I-Message”.
“I-Messages” are a great tool to help you get your message across in an honest way without sounding mean. “I-Messages” help you to tell someone how you’re feeling, why you’re feeling that way, and what you would like for them to do differently. When you use an “I-Message”, the other person is more likely to listen to what you have to say, and they may be more willing to work towards a solution.
A “You-Message” usually expresses anger and places blame on the other person. Most people react to “You-Messages” by defending themselves and finding a way to place the blame on you. Using a “You-Message” decreases the chances the other person will work with you to find a solution to the conflict.
For example, instead of saying, “You never listen to me. You’re always the one doing the talking.” try saying “I feel frustrated when you don’t listen to what I have to say because I listen to you when you talk. Please give me a chance to talk.”
Some additional strategies we teach students to use at school include: taking deep breaths, getting a drink, taking a walk, stretching, reading a book, drawing, and counting to 10.
3rd Grade Music Concert
East Elementary Kids Craft Fair!
We are excited to host the annual Winter Kids Craft Fair for students at East Elementary. Students will be able to bring crafts created at home to sell at school on the mornings of Friday, December 6, and Friday, December 13. Sales will run from 7:25 - 7:45, and students will need to be here at 7:15 am on those days to set up their booth.
Crafts to be sold must be approved by Mrs. Job prior to sale. During the sale, items will only be allowed to be sold for $1.00 or less (.25, .50, or .75) and students will only be able to purchase items using quarters. Ideas for crafts might include: bracelets, keychains, painted rocks, bookmarks, magnets, ornaments, etc. Pinterest is a great resource, especially for finding Christmas/winter themed items. Crafts need to be made by the student with as little help from an adult as possible.
We will host another sale in the spring (April 25). That event will run with the same guidelines as this winter sale (ie: quarters only, must be student made, etc). You don't have to participate in this sale to be able to do the one in the spring. Students can sign up for both, either or neither sale. Sign ups for the spring sale will be sent home closer to the date.
This event is completely optional and is open to all students K-4 who attend East Elementary. All profits made will go entirely to the student who made the craft. If your child would like to participate in this, please fill out this form and return it to Mrs. Job by November 15, 2024. All students whose crafts are approved will have a ‘booth’ set up at all of the mornings that the sale will run.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Job ljob@jackson.k12.mo.us
