A Note From Principal May - 5 Essential Survey
Dear Station Parents,
Your input is invaluable to us as we strive to continuously improve and enhance the educational experience for our students here at Station. We are, once again, eager to hear your thoughts, suggestions, and concerns regarding various aspects of our school community, through the Illinois 5 Essentials Survey. To gather this important feedback, we kindly ask you to participate before Spring Break. Your responses will help us better understand the needs and preferences of our parent community, allowing us to make informed decisions and implement positive changes. The data is also used to represent our school on the Illinois School Report Card, which is a viewable report, representing our school to the public eye. Your feedback is anonymous and will be kept confidential. We appreciate your time and commitment to our school, and we look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your ongoing support. Please find the link here (choose “Lake County”, then search for “Barrington Middle School; Station Campus”).
Students will also be completing the 5 Essential Survey, on Friday, March 1st. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation, please contact me directly, prior to the scheduled date at cmay@barrington220.org. Survey questions, and more, can be found on the Illinois 5Essentials website. (https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois).
Warm Regards,
Chad May

Parent Teacher Conferences Coming Soon!
Spring Parent Teacher Conferences are just around the corner, on March 20, and 21! The first day will be open for parents to schedule their own 10 minute sessions with teachers, on demand. The sign up for that day will open on March 9 and closes on March 17. March 21 will be team conferences, set up by teachers for selected parents. Conferences will run from 4:00-8:30 on the 20th, and from 4:00-7:00 on the 21st. Students have school on both days, and there will be no school on Friday March 22. Virtual conferences will be available upon request.
Parents will schedule appointments through this web site: Meet The Teacher. For more step-by-step information regarding the registration process please click here.
Translation services will be available to assist with communication during conferences on both days. You will be able to select having a translator provided during the registration process. If you have any questions about registering for a conference with your child’s teacher(s), you may contact our Registrar, Debbie Owen, via email at Dowen@barrington220.org.
Honoring Black History Month: Celebrating Achievements, Resilience, and Legacy
Every February, we come together to celebrate Black History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the incredible contributions, achievements, and resilience of Black individuals throughout history. It's a month where we reflect on the struggles and triumphs of Black Americans, highlighting their vital role in shaping our society and culture. For middle school students, it's an opportunity to learn about the rich tapestry of Black history and the remarkable individuals who have made lasting impacts in various fields.
Black history is filled with trailblazers who have broken barriers and paved the way for future generations. From activists like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. who fought for civil rights, to inventors like George Washington Carver and Lonnie Johnson who revolutionized science and technology, to artists like Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes who used their words to inspire change, the contributions of Black Americans are woven into the fabric of our nation's history.
Please join us as we spend the month of February, honoring these extraordinary Americans!
Station Birthday Rules
You may have noticed that we are making special announcements, celebrating student birthdays here at Station! As parents, we often want to make our children's birthdays extra special, and one way we do that is by bringing in treats for their classmates at school. However, as our understanding of nutrition and food allergies grows, it may be time to reconsider this tradition, especially in middle school settings. Here are a few reasons why skipping birthday treats at middle school could be a sweet idea.
Food Allergies
Food allergies are a serious concern, affecting millions of children across the country, and Station Campus is no exception. Even a small amount of a food allergen can trigger a life-threatening reaction in some individuals. By avoiding birthday treats in the classroom/cafe, we can create a safer environment for students with food allergies and prevent potentially dangerous situations. It's essential to prioritize the health and safety of all students, regardless of their dietary restrictions.
Inclusivity
Not all families have the means to provide birthday treats for their children's classmates, and some cultures may not place the same emphasis on birthday celebrations. By refraining from birthday treats in the classroom, we can create a more inclusive environment where every child feels valued and respected, regardless of their socioeconomic status or cultural background. Celebrating birthdays in other ways, such as with a small gift or a heartfelt card, can be just as meaningful and inclusive.
In conclusion, while the tradition of bringing birthday treats to school may seem harmless, there are several compelling reasons to reconsider this practice, especially in our middle school setting. By prioritizing health, safety and inclusivity we can create a more positive and supportive learning environment for all students. So, the next time your child's birthday rolls around, consider celebrating in ways that are both meaningful and mindful of the well-being of everyone involved.

Announcing our new digital menu technology, The Nutrislice App!
The everyday expectations and digital sophistication of students is continuing to grow and evolve, and we must continually adapt and advance our technologies to meet and exceed those expectations.
I’m excited to announce the next step in the evolution of our digital menu technology. We are upgrading to Nutrislice, and the new web and app platforms will be live January 12, 2024. Nutrislice will provide Barrington 220 with an enhanced user experience providing the ability to easily navigate menus, filter for dietary and allergen restrictions, change preferred language settings, and much more. The SO Happy App will continue to be used until the end of this school year as we customize the new format for the district.
Look for the App links, soon to be posted on our district website!
