JROTC
Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps
What is JROTC?
The JROTC program helps high school students develop leadership skills and learn about their rights and responsibilities as American citizens. It teaches self-discipline and self-confidence to prepare students for the challenges of adulthood. Through JROTC, teenagers can develop valuable character traits and practical life skills that benefit their education, careers, and personal lives. Many cadets credit JROTC with helping them cultivate the perseverance and determination necessary to achieve their goals.
JROTC is a program for everyone, focusing on learning new skills, building leadership, and having fun. There's no pressure to join the military after high school—it's entirely your choice. You can make great friends, participate in exciting activities, and grow as a person.
10 Reasons JROTC Benefits Students Learning
Time management and getting things done
In JROTC, you'll learn how to handle your time, juggle different tasks, and determine what needs to be done first. These are skills that will help you out in the long run.
Setting Personal High Standards
In JROTC, you do things to learn about yourself so that you can set goals for school, college, your future job, and life.
Develop Character
The values of Army JROTC include staying loyal, doing your duty, showing respect, helping others without expecting anything in return, being honorable, maintaining integrity, and having personal courage.
Learn To Be A Great Leader
JROTC teaches awesome leadership skills and other real-life abilities similar to those taught at West Point, Annapolis, and the other military academies. To boost your leadership skills, you could apply for important roles like Battalion Commander, Battalion Executive Officer, and Battalion Command Sergeant Major.
Competitive Advantage to Military Universities and more.
U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point. U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) all view JROTC programs in high regard, along with many other top universities.
College Scholarship Opportunities
If you want money for college, this is a great way to pay for it. If you join a JROTC program, you become eligible for full-ride ROTC scholarships and paid spots at the five military service academies.
Adventures and Challenges
Enjoy cool activities and classes: Some military schools offer STEM and STEAM subjects. At SHS, students learn archery and compete in various challenges both on campus and at JBLM.
Service Is Paramount
Get involved in helping others—Whether it's pitching in at your school or getting involved in your local community, JROTC gives you opportunities to help others. Students make a difference through hands-on projects for both the school and the community, and they get the chance to make a real impact.
Boost Grades and Fulfill Multiple Credits
JROTC Leadership can help you improve in school, boost your grades, and get more involved in community service. It can also strengthen your college applications and help you get scholarships.
At SHS, JROTC offers a unique opportunity for students to meet their CTE and PE credit requirements, making it an integral part of their academic journey.
Improve Your Physical Fitness
JROTC in high school has a lot of excellent physical activities. For example, there's this awesome thing called The JROTC National Raider Challenge, where you do a 5K run, climb a rope bridge, tackle obstacle courses, and tons more. Students also compete in various JROTC competitions throughout the year.
STUDENTS CAN STILL SIGN UP FOR JROTC
Students can still enroll in the JROTC program at SHS. Contact your alpha counselor or our JROTC Instructors to sign up or learn more. Counselors will return to school on August 15, and if you do not hear from them immediately, you can expect a response around then.
