Sunday Chat with Principal Dothard
Hello Hornet Nation,
We had a great start to testing last week with World Literature. If you missed that test for whatever reason, you will have another chance later. This week we are picking up with Geometry testing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure you are in school.
This week we will have our first annual Career and College Fair in the Gym on Thursday. We have almost 50 companies, colleges, and community agencies. Students will be able to get summer work, internships, careers, and acceptance into college! Our goal is to help students realize how school can help get them to find the perfect career. One thing I want all students to know is that hard work and perseverance are choices that we make. It doesn’t take talent or money. There’s an old saying, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work”.
At Great Mills, we encourage students to make the right choice every day. These choices and expectations 100% match career expectations. Be on time for class, do your work on time, put forth effort in all tasks, ask for help when needed, and speak respectfully to others, especially staff. This goes along with teaching Code Switching. Code Switching is something that every successful person does great. Everyone acts one way at home, another way when out with friends, a different way when out on a date, and a completely different way when at work. This doesn’t make you fake, it makes you smart! We have to be like chameleons adapting to each situation. I believe this is why people say, success is a choice.
Keep in mind on Friday, April 21, 2023, we will have a virtual 2-hour early dismissal day for students. Please make sure your student(s) log in and complete their assignments from home. This is all I have, so until next time, have a great week Hornet Nation!

Student Cell Phone Use
Did you know that even just a few minutes on a cell phone texting, checking social media, etc adds up over the course of a school day? Students, who use their devices for just 5 minutes each period, lose nearly 1 period of instructional time per day (35 minutes of class). Over the course of 1 week, those 5 minutes per class adds up to nearly 4 missed periods! Personal devices can be a HUGE distraction for students. Please start this year off right, by keeping personal devices away in your bookbag or at a charging station if your teacher has one available. There is a direct connection to phone usage during the school day to grades. Encourage your student/s to only use their phone during lunch, between classes, or when approved by a teacher.
