Attendance Information
What happens when a student becomes excessively absent from school?
In the event a child of compulsory school age is absent with a nonmedical excuse or without legitimate excuse for 38 or more hours in one school month or 65 or more hours in a school year, Ohio law requires the following to occur:
The school or district will notify the student’s parents or guardians in writing within seven days of the triggering absence if the absences are for nonmedical reasons or without legitimate excuse;
The student will follow the school or district’s policy for addressing excessive absences; and
The school or district may refer the student and family to community resources, as appropriate.
Remind 101
Just a reminder that the district uses Remind 101 to notify families of closings, delays, transportation information, and other emergencies. Please assure that you have signed up or have up-to-date information in your account. There are instructions on the school's website under the Parent tab on how to sign up!
End of Day Dismissal Process
We have been reviewing different options that could be implemented for our end of the school day process. We have visited another school to see the program in action and have come away impressed. Honestly, it is very challenging to keep everyone safe, which is our top priority. We are seeing many last minute changes in who is being picked up, and by whom. We have custodial issues that require us to follow legal agreements set forth in court. We do all this while trying to keep dismissal from taking too long. We felt we needed to look at our process and work to improve it.
We will have more information about changes that may occur over Winter Break.
Superintendent's Messages Information
If you have signed up to receive Mr. Welker's Community Emails but are not receiving the email messages, please do one of the following to allow his emails to reach your inbox.
1. check your spam/trash folder
2. add bwelker@eastwoodschools.org to your contacts
We have received numerous duplicate sign ups from community members that are already on the Superintendent's Community mailing list so hopefully doing one or both of the above will allow you to receive the email messages.
Kindergarten News
The boys and girls in kindergarten have been learning so much this year. Our first unit in reading was all about Nursery Rhymes. We read many different kinds of nursery rhymes and then participated in Nursery Rhyme Olympics to celebrate.
The Five Senses was our second unit in reading. We combined the five senses with learning about apples as we tasted different colors of apples and graphed our favorites. The Five Senses also inspired some artwork of Mr. Potato Head.
Mrs. Ohms has visited kindergarten twice already to help us understand what it means to be an Eastwood Eagle and follow the Eagle Way. We are working hard each day to do what is right, do the best we can, and treat others how we would like to be treated. We’ve had a great start to the school year already!
Couselors Corner- October
Happy October Eagles!
This month in 4th and 5th grade classroom lessons, we focused on building a Growth Mindset. 4th grade read Your Fantastic Elastic Brain. We discussed different parts of the brain and how each part gets stronger when we make it work hard and challenge ourselves. 5th grade completed a Growth Mindset Escape Room. They learned about things we can do to develop a growth mindset, such as using positive self-talk, setting goals, and learning from mistakes. I am continuing to eat lunch with all 4th and 5th grade students in small groups. I have enjoyed learning about your children this way! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out. I am typically in the building Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

During September, I visited all K-3rd grade classrooms to teach lessons on topics that I call “life skills,” or skills needed to be successful socially and emotionally in life. Perhaps, your child mentioned my visit. :)
In Kindergarten, we focused on having a growth mindset and not giving up. We learned that hard work is like exercise for the brain. Hard work makes our brain stronger and smarter!
In 1st grade, we learned about feelings. Some feelings are comfortable while others are uncomfortable. We can have more than one feeling at the same time. We can notice how someone might be feeling by looking for clues on their face and body. All feelings are normal and okay!
In 2nd grade, we learned that problems come in different sizes. We compared problems to the weather. Windy problems are very small (no biggie!) Rainy problems are small. We can be problem-solvers. If we try to solve the problem on our own and it does not work, then we might need help from an adult. Problem solving strategies might include using a coping skill or conflict resolution strategy (e.g. ignore, move away, talk friendly, talk firmly). Stormy problems are medium-sized and we will probably need adult help to solve them. Tornado problems are BIG. They are emergencies (e.g., someone is in danger, hurt badly, etc.) We need to ask for adult help right away!
In 3rd grade, we learned about things in life that are in our control vs. out of our control. We can usually change or try to fix what is in our control (e.g., what I say, what I do, what I think) . We cannot change things that are out of our control (e.g., uncontrollable forces of nature, what other people say, what other people do). However, we can find ways to handle and work through these situations. In any given situation, there are factors that we CAN control.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out any time with questions or concerns. I am looking forward to returning to all the classrooms this month! :)
