Message From Principal Engdall
I do hope that you are enjoying the slightly cooler temperatures. If you are someone that enjoys the early morning, I am sure you can feel the change in the air. What promise!
When we moved to the Shaw campus 4 years ago, it was mostly devoid of tree’s. Our first fall we planted 18, 5-gallon Mesquite and Palo Verde trees on our playground and in our field area for the children to enjoy and grow with. The children loved the tree’s, they have thrived and have taught us botany, environmental significance and life lessons:
Stand tall and proud
Go out on a limb
Remember your roots
Drink plenty of water
Be content with your natural beauty
Enjoy the view
They also taught us what happens when we are careless with them:
Broken branches
Stripped bark
Skinned elbows and knees
Icky oxygen
Thorns…oh, that is how it protects itself…ouch
They have grown enormously since their children left last March. They are giving shade now and some are so large there are now spaces sit beneath them. The trees have been holding a place for the children and “time spent among trees is never wasted.”
Thank you parents for the work you are doing with and for us. I hear from many of you that the “homeschool exhaustion is as real as Covid exhaustion.” While the virtual platform is the antithesis of Montessori, we are seeing the children and you making it the very best it can be. This next hurdle, especially for our younger learners is the Galileo test. This too will soon be over and behind us and we hope that for the next test administration cycle you are not playing a starring role. Shine on Shaw Stars!
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Ms. (Hawkins) Collier
We have had a successful first week of virtual assessments. Thank you to the teachers, parents and students for partnering with us for this brand new process.
As we begin our next week of assessments, just a reminder:
- Your student will need a quiet space to work, free of distractions.
- Our K-3rd students may need your support logging into Galileo: login.imaginelearning.com Site code: 406300
- Once your student is logged in, please allow your student to work independently on the assessment.
- Students should be clicking their own answers. There may be questions they do not know, and that is okay. Encouraging students to do their own work without help from an adult will give the teachers feedback on what they need to learn and progress.
- If a student has a question, they should raise their hand and seek support from their teacher proctor. Please refer to the parent/student testing agreements that have been posted and signed (attached below).
Again, we thank you for your support in helping chart the success of each and every student.

What is a brain break?
A brain break is a short activity that you and/or your child can do to help stimulate your brain and body. It will help you to refocus, re-energize and relax. This will allow you to be in a better headspace to work or learn.
Here are some brain break examples.
Focus Ball Breathing: With your legs on the ground and sitting up straight, bring your hands together palms touching. Keep your fingertips together and separate your palms away from each other as if there was a ball between your hands. Bring them together and then apart, breathing in as you separate your hands and breathing out as you bring them back together. Try this for about 60 seconds.
Bell Mini Meditation: Sit still with your feet planted on the ground. Close your eyes and ring a bell. Keep your eyes closed until you can no longer hear the bell. At the end, take a deep breath in and out.
Hot Hands: Rub your hands together really fast until they get warm. Once they are warm close your eyes and cover them with your hands, practice deep breathing to clear your mind and refocus.
30 Second Dance Party: Set a timer and give yourself 30 seconds to groove it out to your favorite song before jumping back into work/learning. You can also stretch this to the length of your favorite song!
Open your Heart: Stand tall and stretch your arms all the way back. Relax your shoulders, close your eyes and count to 10 breathing deeply as you do so. Open your eyes and return to work.
Brisk Walk: Take a brisk 3 to 5 minute walk to get your body moving and stimulate your mind. Take a few deep breaths then settle back down to work.
Enjoy!

Message From Shaw PTA
PTA MEMBERSHIP
Joining the PTA is a great way to get involved, meet other families and learn more about your student’s school life. Each year we hold our annual PTA Membership Drive and welcome anyone who wants to join, including parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, school faculty, neighbors, friends, businesses, or any other acquaintances. Membership can be obtained by clicking on the link below and you must rejoin each school year to become an active PTA member. Due to current Arizona PTA bylaws, our current rules state membership is for a single member and each paid member is entitled to one vote. If you would like to vote in this year’s election which will be held next week through an online ballot system proctored by Arizona PTA, please sign up to become a member by noon on Saturday, September 12th.
We have created a member relief fund with additional donations generated during the membership registration process by community members. Anyone who wants to sponsor a family who cannot pay, can make a $10.00 payment to our relief fund. Please send an email to ShawMontessori@gmail.com letting us know how many memberships were donated.
For those who are unable to pay the membership dues but would like to support the PTA, please fill out this Google form for a single membership scholarship at https://forms.gle/wAfvjgAM2yi9aoq46 . The person on this form will remain confidential to members at large and will only be seen by elected members of the board. Within two (2) days after submitting the form, you will be notified that you are a recipient of the scholarship and that you will be entitled to all the benefits of PTA membership.
