Kia ora tātou e te whānau o Te Kura o Porritt!
Man, what a scorcher it has been just lately! Our tamariki have enjoyed cooling off in the school pool and have done a good job focusing on learning with the heat making them tired. Many thanks to Mr McDonald - Matua Hamish. You've done a great job keeping our pool clean and clear!
Due to the heat, we had an unexpected fire alarm activation with one of our sensors heating up and triggering our fire alarm. We evacuated out to the rear of the field and were all accounted for. Fire trucks attended and the defect was discovered and duly replaced this morning. This was another chance to observe how cool and calm and organised our kura is.
This edition of our Porritt School Press is all about keeping us organised with the end of the 2024 school year in sight. We have a few cool events and celebrations coming up, and a few boxes left to tick before the summer break. Double-check your dates and times to keep your whānau organised.
Reo Rua/Reo Rumaki - Expression of Interest
Just below, is an update following our whānau hui on November 20. I felt privileged hearing from our whānau during this hui, the awesome whakaaro, thoughts and perspectives, from those present. We're excited to ask for Expressions of Interest as a next step. Please see below!
End of Year Learning Summaries - Monday 16 December
These awesome records of your child's learning and progress come home on Monday 16 December. We will send home a hard copy and share one via HERO. Please make time to sit with your tamaiti, your child, to read through this together. Many thanks to our teaching staff for the hard work bringing these summaries together.
Next week, on Wednesday, all tamariki will spend time as a whole group in their Learning Teams for 2025 connecting with the people and the learning environments in their 2025 Learning Team.We are still finalising our staffing plan for 2024. We will share an update in our final Porritt School Press for the year.
For now, let's enjoy the last few days of of the 2024 school year together, and treasure the time we have left with these tamariki of ours. As always, if there is anything else we can help with, please do reach out and get in touch.
Mauriora,
Maaka Papuni - Tumuaki
Kia ora e te whānau whānui o Te Kura o Porritt!
On Wednesday 20 November, we met with our whānau to korero around the potential for the establishment of a reo rua, a bilingual space, or a reo rumaki, an immersion space, in our kura in 2025 and beyond.
It was a privilege as a school leader to hear the beautiful whakaaro and korero, the thoughts and the feelings and views our whānau shared as a part of this hui.
We have captured this korero and have a summary of the discussion with our whānau about opening up bilingual/immersion Te Reo Māori pathways through our kura moving ahead.
We are now calling for an expression of interest from whānau and caregivers here. If you would like to find out more about how this could look for your child in 2025, please click on the link below to express an interest in your child being considered for this pathway.
We have some information about a possibility in 2025 we'd like to share with interested whānau and tamariki. We are looking for expressions of interest by Wednesday 11 December - apologies for the haste e te whānau!
Tiro atu ki te pae, mauria atu tō korowai.
Look forward into the horizon and prepare.
Mauriora koutou - we look forward to hearing from you!

Pōtae, Wai Māori and Sunscreen Essential!
It has been a scorcher just lately - 34 degrees today!
It is absolutely essential that our tamariki have a pōtae, a school hat, to wear whenever our tamariki are outside. We also need our tamariki arriving with a water bottle to keep the hydration up, and some sunscreen. They can top up the sunscreen at school, but a first layer at home would be great!
These wonderful tamariki have the pōtae game sorted!
Indigo, Emily and Mia well covered!
Darius, Rosaria, Kyle and Ollie chilling out in the shade!
Dry Cleaning and Stocktake soon!
Our Porritt School tamariki always look amazing representing our kura. We can show PRIDE in these awesome uniforms. The huge majority of our sports uniforms are out in the community. We need these all back in ASAP. Some sports are finished for the year, we'd like those in today. Some sports have one or two more games left in total.
It is critical we have all of our sports uniforms back in ASAP. We will dry clean them all, and run a stocktake to see what uniforms we may need to purchase in 2025.
Please get these precious uniforms back to school ASAP!
Last night, we got to recognise and celebrate our Paula, or 'Mrs Nicol', one of our Team Rua kaiako, at the NZEI Registration Ceremony at the Napier Sailing Club.
Paula started her time with us in 2022 as a third year student teacher learning throiught the EIT Teacher Training Programme. We were lucky enough to be able to offer Paula her first teaching job in 2023. Paula has been mentored by Ben Martin and Emma Woods throughout the two years. Paula has completed a very successful two years of provisional registration as a beginning teacher...she's now a fully registered teacher!
Congratulations to Paula on her well deserved full registration. A big mihi to her whānau Nath, Cole and Emma for their support as well! Ka rawe Mrs Nicol - welcome to the noble profession!
