8th Grade Projects
In order for River Oak Charter School 8th grade students to graduate and move onto the high school of their choice, they must complete the "8th Grade Project".
At ROCS, each 8th grade student embarks upon their year-long independent study at the end of the 7th grade, when they choose a topic of special interest. Upon approval by their class teacher, students pursue an in-depth study of the topic, with ongoing guidance from an expert mentor. Students are invited to select a theme that really calls to them and has the potential to lay the groundwork for a lifelong passion. Along the way, students strengthen planning and research skills, cultivate stamina, and experience bringing a self-initiated project to completion.
Our 8th Graders presented their projects to our school community this week. We witnessed the passion and uniqueness of each 8th grader, and they shared what they learned about themselves after completion. They learned resilience and were positively impacted through the mentorship experience. Below are a few photos of 8th graders with their buddies!

Teacher Appreciation Week
This week our ROCS staff enjoyed donuts and coffee on Monday, veggies and dip on Tuesday, a full breakfast on Wednesday with chair massages in the afternoon, a chocolate bar on Thursday and cookies and lemonade on Friday!
Thank you to the Parent Council and Parent community for the beautiful appreciation breakfast for the ROCS Staff! It was so lovely and full of homemade goodness and drinks that lasted the rest of the week. We are so blessed!
*Thank you Erin Moynahan for the planning and beautiful flowers, bookmarks and signs!

Parent Council News
*ROCS annual Spring Clean-o-thon will be happening this year on Saturday, May 28th from 8-1 p.m. This is a wonderful all school event that promotes the caring and community approach that makes River Oak. Families will gather to beautify the campus by cleaning and preparing the grounds for the year's end. Classrooms will be tidied at this time and teachers will have job lists prepared. This coincides with the moving of the grades and is a wonderful opportunity for thinking ahead to the ‘22-’23 school year. **After this event, a pledge drive form will accompany children home asking for sponsorship either monetarily or in-kind volunteerism in return for student service cleaning up the campus and greater Leslie Street. Proceeds benefit the Parent Council. Please contact Jessica Beckstrom with any questions at jnarstrom@gmail.com.
*On Friday, May 13th, all classrooms are making flower crowns for the Pastels on the Plaza celebration. Classes will spend the morning arranging their flower crowns that they will wear during their Mayday dance at the Pastels event the following day. Classes will be looking for donations of hardy flowers as well as greenery and raffia. Pastels is also holding a flower crown making booth for patrons of the event and would appreciate any extra flowers donations for this booth. Thank you RO families for your support in making this event a treasure for the entire Ukiah Valley community.
*The parents of 1st grade will offer childcare to those families who would like to attend the Screenagers showing. This option is available to younger siblings not enrolled in ROCS as well, to help facilitate families availability to attend the showing. $7 for the first child and $5 per sibling.
*The next Parent Council meeting will be Thursday, June 2 at 5:30p, in person in the faculty lounge and on zoom
