Asa C. Adams School Newsletter
January/February 2025
Dear Asa Families,
We are certainly in the midst of winter and navigating some frigid temperatures. Please remember we go out for recess anytime the "feels like" temperature is 10 degrees or higher. The fresh air and opportunity to play in the snow is just what students need this time of year. The weeks between the start of the new year and February break have certainly been busy with lots of learning and many exciting activities that mark milestones in our school year. We have been learning about significant African American community members each morning on the daily announcements. Our wonderful Asa Ambassadors have been stepping in to share these highlights. Many thanks to Mrs. Erhardt and these standout student leaders.
We have also celebrated the 100th day of school with classroom and grade level projects. First graders shared their 100th day projects with families and members of our school community on Friday, February 7th. We certainly have some very creative first graders. Thank you to everyone who was able to join the first grade project exhibition. We still have Valentine's Day and the annual Asa Sledding party to look forward to before the February break.
We also have several important dates in the weeks and months ahead. Be sure to take a look at the list of dates and mark your calendar. In particular, March 13th we have Lynn Lyons visiting the RSU 26 schools and she will be holding a parent and community presentation at 6pm in the Orono Performing Arts Center. She will be presenting about Smartphones, Social Media, Stress and Anxiety. More information regarding this event is highlighted further on in the newsletter.
Finally, please be well, and remember we are always here if you need us.
Warm regards,
Ms. Wyman and Ms. West

Smartphones, Social Media, Stress, and Anxiety: What we need to know and what we can DO!
Parent and Community Presentation and Discussion: Thursday, March 13th; 6:00pm - 7:30pm in the OPAC
From Stress to Smartphones, from Freak-Outs to Friendships: What Parents Need to Know (and DO!) about Worry, Anxiety and Depression
Current news about young people and mental health has created warranted concern, but the information can be overwhelming and hard to sort through. Parents need dependable strategies to help their children manage their anxiety, moods, and social pressures, including social media and screens. The ability to help guide our children requires – more than ever – an ability to recognize and address one’s own emotional management as we practice and model better skills to meet life’s challenges. Prevention is the goal.
Based on current research and 35 years of clinical experience, Lynn Lyons will talk about the common traps adults fall into, the role of smartphones and social media, and the six foundational and durable skills that directly teach emotional management, active participation in learning, and strong relationships.
