Dear Families,
We are very grateful to the staff from Childhood Victories, Inc. for spending time in at South Park yesterday to present age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum in accordance with Erinβs Law (House Bill 6193). If you are interested in additional information to review with your child as a follow-up to the presentations, please see the links below that correspond to each grade level.

This education is a critical part of empowering children with the tools they need to protect themselves. We encourage you to continue these important conversations at home. Talking openly with your child reinforces what theyβre learning at school and helps build their confidence in speaking up if something doesnβt feel right.
Thank you for partnering with us in keeping our students safe, supported, and strong.

Dear South Park Families,
We are excited that South Park will once again be hosting VIP (Very Important Penguin) Day on Tuesday, May 20th and Thursday, May 22nd 2025!
Each student will be able to invite one special guest (family/adult 16+ with state ID) to visit the classroom for thirty minutes to participate in a fun activity at school!
VIP Day Details:
Please RSVP before Friday, May 9th to sign up for VIP Day. Please click the link for your grade level at the bottom of this letter. You will need to fill this form out for each child who will have a VIP.
VIPs MUST have a DRIVERβS LICENSE or STATE ID. We cannot let you in without it.
We recommend that VIPs stop by the South Park office prior to VIP Day
(Thursday 5/15, Friday 5/16, or Monday 5/19) to have their IDs scanned through the schoolβs visitor management system. VIPs can have their IDs scanned on the day of the event, but they will need to wait in line and they may risk the chance of being late.ONLY VIPs who have signed up in advance will be allowed to attend.
The VIP should arrive through the school's front center doors at least 10 minutes before the grade's specific time to sign in.
If your VIP cannot make the event or changes need to be made to who is coming as a VIP, please contact your childβs teacher prior to their assigned date so we know who to expect or we can make arrangements to ensure all students have a special person available!

Itβs Arbor Day! Arbor Day was first celebrated in 1872, and is now officially observed in the U.S. on the last Friday of April. Many other countries also celebrate a tree-planting day, as well. The students of each Deerfield school have taken turns planting trees on Arbor Day for the past several years, including South Park in 2023 and the Early Learners program in 2024. If you visit our Storywalk over the next several weeks, you can read the book This is the Tree We Planted, and see some pictures from our tree planting ceremonies. Here are some great books to celebrate the importance of trees in our world!
Listen to the Language of the Trees A lyrical read aloud, Listen to the Language of the Trees is the story of a seedling, newly sprouted at the base of a giant tree. As it stretches its roots into an underground web of fungi, it learns that its fellow trees use the fungi to pass messages and share resources!
Kate, Who Tamed the Wind A wild wind blows on the tippy-top of a steep hill, turning everything upside down for the man who lives there. Luckily, Kate comes up with a plan to tame the wind. With an old wheelbarrow full of young trees, she journeys up the steep hill to add a little green to the man's life, and to protect his house from the howling wind.
It Starts with a Seed How can something so small grow into a tree, which is such an incredibly big thing to be? Journey through the seasons and years to watch as a single seed transforms into a mighty tree, and spot all the creatures that make it their home.
Nature All Around: Trees In this first book in the Nature All Around series, kids will learn all about trees and the vital role that they play for people and animals. This introduction to the topic covers the different kinds of trees, how they grow and change throughout the seasons and how they provide a home to a variety of animals.
Save the Date: Band/Orchestra 3rd Grade Parent Night!

News From Early Learners
As we continue to explore our spring unit this week, our Half-Day 3s and 4s learned about the life cycle of a butterfly and have enjoyed watching our caterpillar friends grow each day. We also continued observing our bean plants as they have been moving through their life cycle, and the students were excited to plant their own seeds. In math, we are continuing to practice identifying numbers in different ways, while also strengthening our fine motor skills through cutting and gluing activities.
Full-Day 4s are learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly and are excited to check in on our classroom caterpillars each day. We also continue to observe our lima bean plants and record our observations in our plant books. In math, we are reviewing concepts such as simple addition, patterning, and using shapes to create a picture. We are so excited for our music show next week and canβt wait to perform for our families!
As a reminder, Dr. Grady will be doing a presentation on Erin's Law on Tuesday, April 29 during Grady's Group. Erin's Law (House Bill 6193) was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on January 24, 2013. This law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades Pre-K through 12. The presentation she will use is very much geared toward our youngest learners and will cover the following topics:
- Distinguishing safe from unsafe touches
- Saying βNOβ
- Telling a trusted adult
