The Red Wing High School Robotics Team, “Constellations”, had a great day at the 27-team First Tech Challenge tournament, “Into The Deep” on November 23. As usual, the amount of work to do exceeded the time available, so the 7 Students attending practiced their Judges Presentation on the bus ride to the event. The Team arrived at 8:30 AM, the Students took over, set up the Pit, and took the Robot to the Field for the Communications Check, which proceeded smoothly.
Off to the Lunchroom to practice the Presentation and present to the Judges at 9 AM - the Team delivered a great presentation, and moved to the Robot Inspection station, where they passed the inspection with 2 millimeters to spare! Now to the practice field to check some functions, and onto the Playing Field for a practice match. Each Robot is partnered with one other Robot to form an “Alliance” to play the game against another “Alliance”.
Following the Driver’s Meeting, we received our schedule for the Qualifying Round, in which we were assigned 7 matches instead of the usual 6 - we learned that we were a surrogate for a team that needed a partner - for us, Match 3 didn’t apply to our rankings (this becomes important later).
Match 1 - With the help of a good partner robot, we won that match 67-29
Match 2 - we won 70 to 44
Match 3 - we lost 46 to 76, but remained #3 on the Leader Board (we were only a surrogate)
Match 4 - we had a failure on the field, but had a great partner robot (26838, “Mighty Morphing Banana Slugs”) which performed well and won the match 65-14
At this point, we were atop the Leader Board.
Match 5 - we won again, 106-64
Now we are solidly atop the Leader Board, but a 3D printed part had broken - we asked the Sponsoring School to print us a new part, which took about 30 minutes.
Match 6 - We had a Robot malfunction, and our Team lost, 12-81
Match 7 - The Robot malfunctioned again (wearing out and parts coming loose) and we lost 13-93
At this point, we have fallen to #8 on the Leader Board, but repaired and improved our Robot for the Playoffs, just in case.
Double Elimination Playoffs - There were 6 Alliances in the Playoffs - during the selection process, our team moved up to Captain the 5th Alliance - we chose as a partner team 26838, “Mighty Morphing Banana Slugs” (See Match 4)
Both our teams repaired and refurbished our Robots -
Playoff Match #1 - we won 120-26
Playoff Match #2 - against the #1 ranked Alliance - we lost 119-170
Playoff Match #3 - Lower Bracket - We won 60-34 - Our Partner Robot tipped over in front of the scoring element, but we reached over our fallen partner to score points and win the match.
Before the next Match, our Partner tried desperately to repair the damage to their robot and thought they had a potential fix
Playoff match #4 - Disaster! Our Partner’s game tool fell off; we scored 35 points ourselves, but without our partner’s help, were defeated 35-49.
Conclusion: We were capable of scoring 100 or more points in every match when our robots didn’t break - we could have reached the Finals - but anything can happen in Robotics!
The Team had a great time; we played 11 matches, and scored 713 points through the day.
We were also nominated for the Motivate Award due to our Judges Presentation regarding outreach in the Community.
It was a joy to observe these talented, responsible, resourceful, courteous, industrious Students refining their Robotics and life skills!
