A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear PES community,
We have made it through the first week of March. It has been a fun week at school with our Read Across America spirit week. We are looking forward to Friday, when we will have some guest readers joining classrooms.
Celebrations and Classroom Learning! 🎊🎒
Congratulations to our January students of the month. Last week, we had a celebration in the gym to recognize our monthly winners. Students then had the opportunity to participate in a fun school wide competitive game. This afternoon, we will recognize the February student of the month winners. This year, all our students of the month show a demonstration of our school’s code of character: responsible, respectful, kind and safe behavior.
Fourth grade students had over 200 salmon eggs delivered to school. Fourth graders are learning about the life cycle of the Atalnatic salmon, their habitat, and the way in which they grow. In the spring, the students will have the opportunity to release the salmon.
Fifth grade students are continuing their study of the American Revolution. They have each chosen an historical figure to study, in preparation of an event where they will dress up like their historical figure and have others ask them questions about their life.
Third grade students finished their first swim lesson class at the YMCA last week. They had a blast in the water. Third graders have also started their lobster study project. Students will examine the life cycle of the lobster, the effects of the warming water, and what we can do as a community to preserve the population.
Social Emotional Learning! ♥️
This month, we are focusing on the qualities of empathy. Why is empathy so important for students? It bridges gaps, fosters understanding, and creates a supportive community. Here are a few ways we can practice empathy: listen actively, share experiences, and help others in need. Students will read the book, A Little Spot of Empathy, and think about the practice of empathy. When practicing empathy, the book recommends three questions students can ask:
What could the person be feeling?
Have I felt that way before?
How would I want to be treated?
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
Best Regards,
Nina Willette, Principal
SPRING AHEAD!

Parents also have the option to pick up their bag from school on Thursdays, if that works best for their family.
If you would like to participate in this free and confidential program or need some more information, please email Mrs. McCartney at tmccartney@rsu1.org or Mrs. Doran at tdoran@rsu1.org.
