Principal's Corner Newsletter
Woodstock Union High School and Middle School
September 18, 2022
Dear Students and Families.
I feel thankful for the return of community-building traditions on campus. The high school Student Council will host a Club Fair in the main entrance lobby from Wednesday to Friday this week. Students can learn about the many clubs at WUHS. Also, we invite families to our first Open House since 2019! The Open House will be on October 4th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A schedule template will be emailed to families soon.
This week, you can read about the ninth grade students and their teachers spending an afternoon getting to know each other outside the classroom. Also, high school students in the Innovation Lab engaged with Northeast Temperate Inventory & Monitoring Network at Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Parks. Students in AP Environmental Science and Integrated Environmental Science continued to use various methods to monitor and assess soil health across the campus.
Thank you for completing your annual forms in Alma.
Sincerely,
Garon Smail
Ninth Grade Students Build Community
Last Friday, the ninth grade students took an afternoon away from academics to build community. We kicked off the afternoon with an assembly to introduce the leadership team, and the health and support staff. Students got to see images of their teachers when they were ninth graders, and learned interesting facts about their teachers through fun trivia.
Example of staff high school photo shared with students: Can you guess?
NuVu Innovation Lab Students Engage with MBRNHP Monitoring Systems
High School students are engaging with Northeast Temperate Inventory & Monitoring Network at Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Parks to understand ongoing monitoring projects at the park. The students would use this information to create prototypes of technology-driven solutions for the forest throughout the semester at the NuVu Innovation Lab.
“Soil Your Undies” Challenge Update:
IES Students Bury Items to Study Nutrient Cycle
The 9th grade Integrated Environmental Students spent late last week and early this week burying items around a variety of sites on campus to investigate nutrient cycling. Students selected three items of their choice and marked their locations with 4 popsicle sticks plus a flag in the middle. In about four weeks, the students will return to dig up their items and model the cycling of nutrients and matter.
Registration is now open for Women Can Do!
Registration is now open for Women Can Do, Vermont Works for Women's career exploration conference for high school girls and gender-expansive youth at Vermont Technical College (VTC) in Randolph, VT on October 6! Women Can Do is a day for students to explore a range of careers and skillsets, especially those that are non-traditional for women, such as STEM and trades careers, in a safe, fun, and empowering environment. We encourage youth to step outside their comfort zones to try new activities, introduce themselves to industry professionals, and expand their sense of what's possible.
The day includes:
Action Expo: The action expo is returning bigger and better than ever. There will be TWO locations (indoor and outdoor) where students can meet with professionals and try out a variety of new skills, from programming a robot to using a chainsaw.
Resource Fair: The Resource Fair is an opportunity for students to meet local employers and learn more about a variety of career fields.
Please email Kat Robbins at krobbins@wcsu.net or find her in Room 233 by Sept 20 if you'd be interested in attending!
