Swann Lion Times

In 6th grade, our Lions are working on ratios in Math, learning about Ancient Egypt in Social Studies, studying chemistry in Science, and practicing textual evidence in ELA.

In 7th grade, our Lions are studying forces of motion in Science, circles in Math, story elements in ELA, and the the renaissance in Social Studies.

In 8th grade, our Lions are learning about the Constitution in Social Studies, characterization in ELA, the hydrosphere in Science, and slope in Math.

6th grade mathematicians continued working with ratios this week. See if they can use ratios and double number lines to solve this problem. A pet owner has 5 cats. Each cat has 2 ears and 4 paws. If there are 3 cats in the room, what is the ratio of ears to paws?

7th grade mathematicians worked with circle measurement and area this week. The picture shows a circle divided into 8 equal wedges which are rearranged. How does the picture help to explain why the area of the circle is πr2?

8th grade mathematicians worked on slope this week. The slope of a line is a number we can calculate using any two points on the line. To find the slope, divide the vertical distance between the points by the horizontal distance. The figure shows two right triangles, each with its longest side on the same line. Explain how you know the two triangles are similar.

This week our Lions learned about composition, practiced music for their winter concert, practiced typing, made deconstructed lasagna, and much more! Be sure to ask your students about all the experiences they have in their Encore classes this week!

Last week, the Lions celebrated Red Ribbon Week with a spirit week, a visit from Scruff McGruff the Crime Dog, and a pep rally! Red Ribbon Week is a national event encouraging kids and adults to Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free.™
