Preparing for a Safe, Happy, and Healthy Dance Competition Season: A Guide for Parents and Students
As the dance competition season approaches, excitement fills the air! It’s a time for our dancers to shine, showcase their talent and hard work, bond with their team, and be in a space where they find community with others from different studios who share the same passion as they do. However, amidst the costumes, sequence and anticipation, ensuring a safe, happy, and healthy experience is paramount for both students and their families. This guide will walk you through essential steps to make this competition season a smooth and successful one.
1. Be Prepared: Planning and Organization
A successful competition season starts with good preparation. Dancers, parents, and teachers need to work together to ensure everyone is ready for the big day.
- Pack ahead: Create a checklist of costumes, shoes, makeup, and other essentials to avoid last-minute stress.
- Double-check schedules: Know the performance times, check-in procedures, and bring a printed schedule.
- Stay organized: Keep costumes, shoes, accessories, and personal items neatly packed and labeled. Bring extra tights!
2. Fueling the Body with Nutritious Foods
A well-fueled body leads to optimal performance. Encourage healthy eating habits and hydration leading up to the big day.
- Hydration: Staying hydrated is important. Some dancers add electrolytes to their water on long competition days.
- Limit Caffeine: Excessive caffeine can increase anxiety and cause an energy crash.
- Pack Body-Fueling Snacks: Balanced meals and snacks can sustain energy during long competition days.
3. Staying Calm Under Pressure
Performance nerves are completely normal! Even the most seasoned dancers experience jitters/butterflies before stepping on stage. Instead of avoiding these feelings, embrace them as a sign of excitement and readiness.
For Kids:
- Breathe Deeply: Slow, deep breaths can help calm your mind and body.
- Stay Positive: Replace negative thoughts with encouraging ones.
- Have a Routine: Pre-competition routines can create a sense of normalcy.
For Parents:
- Stay Calm: Kids often mirror your emotions—keeping your cool helps them stay grounded.
- Offer Encouragement: Focus on effort, improvement, and the fun of participating.
- Avoid Overloading Advice: Sometimes, less is more. Trust the preparation that’s already been done.
- Set Realistic Expectations: Emphasize doing their best rather than focusing on a specific outcome.
- Be Supportive: Win or lose, show pride in their effort and attitude.
Calming Techniques: The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique
- 5 Things You Can See
- 4 Things You Can Hear
- 3 Things You Can Feel
- 2 Things You Can Smell
- 1 Thing You Can Taste
4. Knowing That Critiques Are Subjective
Feedback from judges is a valuable part of the competition experience, but it’s also subjective.
- Judge's Role: Judges’ feedback is meant to guide and improve performance.
- Constructive Criticism: Remind dancers that feedback is not personal but rather a tool for development.
- Growth Mindset: Dancers should approach critiques with openness and a willingness to improve.
5. Competition Day: Stay Organized and Safe
A well-organized competition day minimizes stress and maximizes performance.
- Review Check-In Procedures: Understand how and where to check in and meet your team.
- Know Call Times: Being early is being on time.
- Hair/Makeup Ready: Arrive with hair and makeup done and have tights and body liners on.
- Dressing Room Etiquette: Be mindful of others around you in tight, shared spaces.
- Warm-Up Schedules: Ensure dancers have ample time to warm up and prepare.
- Safety in Numbers: Always have a buddy when separating from the team or parents.
6. Celebrating Achievements and Reflecting
Once the competition is over, celebrating and reflecting on experiences fosters growth and camaraderie.
- Celebrate Efforts: Praise hard work, even if the outcome isn't as expected.
- Constructive Feedback: Teachers will share judges' and their own feedback to help dancers grow. It’s really important that feedback and corrections come directly from the teacher. This ensures consistency in instruction and helps build confidence in the studio environment. You can help by continuing to cheer them on, celebrate their efforts, and trust the teaching process.
- Encourage Reflection: Discuss what went well and what could be improved to set goals for the future.
Final Thoughts
Having a safe, happy, and healthy competition season lies in preparation, communication, and positivity. By setting clear expectations, nurturing a supportive environment, and maintaining open lines of communication, parents, students, and faculty can work together to create an unforgettable and successful dance competition experience.
Remember: Don’t hesitate to ask questions, express concerns, and celebrate every small victory along the way. Here’s to a fantastic season filled with joy, growth, and incredible performances!
Shine dancers and leave it all on the floor,
