Principal's Message
Good evening Mira Loma Families,
Our eleventh week of school was highlighted by our Dia de los muertos celebration on Friday of this week! The event was a wonderful cultural celebration in honor of Día de los muertos. Students were able to visit the celebration with their teachers, during lunch, and after school. A number of other schools throughout San Juan Unified School District came to visit and display alters. Thank you to all of the staff and students who worked tirelessly to create a memorable celebration! I was amazed by the student performances and all of the students who dedicated their time to the ofrendas and displays in the Quad. Great job all students and performers! A special thank you to Mr. Stinson, Mrs. Char, and Mrs. Sanders for leading the event and planning a wonderful celebration!
On Monday of this week, our International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) hosted an awards celebration in the cafeteria! Students received certificates based on their amazing achievements and were recognized in front of their families. A huge thank you to Mira Loma High School MYP Coordinator, Mrs. Rachel Volzer, for all of her dedicated planning and hard work to ensure that it was amazing evening for students and families! In addition, a special thank you to Mira Loma teacher, Mr. Jason Fullmore, for his assistance with the organization and presentation of the event, and to Mira Loma School Community Worker, Mrs. Clarissa Alva, and our Parent Teacher Organization volunteers for organizing the decorations and refreshments. Congratulations to all of our IB MYP students and families!
As our Fall Sports season comes to a close, our Winter Sports season is quickly approaching with tryouts beginning the week of November 4th. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Fall Sports athletes, coaches, and parents for dedicating your time and energy to representing our school in a positive manner throughout the season. Your commitment and participation is much appreciated and valued!
We encourage families to continue to have discussions with your children about school safety and how to report if they have knowledge of a concern. Please see the yellow “Safety First” icon below for additional information about how to report a concern. We look forward to continuing our conversations about school safety and growing our partnerships with students and families, in an effort to keep our campus safe.
Thank you for your partnership and dedication to Mira Loma High School and I wish you all a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Kaden Bahner

día de los muertos
Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a cultural holiday celebrated on November 1st and 2nd each year. It’s a time when families honor and remember their loved ones who have passed away. During Día de los Muertos, people believe that the spirits of their loved ones come back to visit them. This holiday is a joyful celebration, not a sad one, because families are welcoming back the spirits and celebrating their lives. People set up altars, called *ofrendas*, with pictures, candles, flowers, and food that their loved ones enjoyed. Marigold flowers, called “cempasúchil”, are often used because their bright colors and scent are thought to guide spirits back to their families.
Día de los Muertos is a meaningful celebration of life and death, reminding people to cherish their loved ones and keep their memories alive. Families might also go to cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of loved ones, and it’s common to see people wearing face paint that looks like skulls, known as *calaveras*. These decorated skulls are a symbol of the holiday, showing that death is part of life and not something to fear.
At Mira Loma we feel that It is important for high school students to learn about other cultures as it fosters understanding, empathy, and for their fellow students and a broader worldview. In an increasingly interconnected world, cultural awareness helps young people appreciate diversity and develop open-minded perspectives, which are crucial for personal and professional growth. Learning about different traditions, beliefs, and customs not only reduces prejudice but also encourages students to respect and value people from different backgrounds. Exposure to various cultures also enhances critical thinking and adaptability, equipping students with the skills needed to navigate complex, multicultural environments. To help students experience the benefits of an international mindset, Mira Loma creates and adapts lessons and units, as well as devotes a day to celebrate culture.
