Theatre Students Compete at District Competition; Qualify for State!
On Saturday, November 23rd, 16 Trojan Theatre students competed at the 2024 District Drama Tournament at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum, which consisted of performing monologues, scenes, songs, and costume design presentations in front of a series of judges. A special shout-out to seniors Alyssa Dufur, Cavin Cook, and Kyle O'Hallaron; juniors Emma Ennis, Tarin Ruppel, and Gavin Tibulski; and sophomore Brynlee Spencer, who all qualified for the State Tournament in December. Great job to everyone who competed!
NIC Math Competition
On November 12th, fourteen PFHS students joined Mrs. Shaber at a local High School Math Competition hosted by North Idaho College. Students participated in two individual tests, then a group of four competed against other local high school students in a "quiz bowl" style competition. All participants did an amazing job and were awarded NIC tuition scholarships for participating. A special shout out to COLETON LUNDWALL who scored THIRD PLACE overall in his division! Students had a great time and are now looking into forming a new Math Club here at PFHS. If you have a passion for math, consider joining us!
English
Of Mice and Men Comics
The sophomores completed a final project retelling the story of the novel we finished, Of Mice and Men. They were tasked with choosing one project topic to show their understanding of the novel. A popular choice was the comic strip showing the story in a visual format while remaining true to the plot line. They were graded on story accuracy, effort and creativity.
Character Connections
Sophomores used critical thinking skills to connect randomly chosen objects to the main characters in a short story from the HMH curriculum called, “The Book of the Dead,” by Edwidge Danticat. They chose objects for four different categories and then found out they had to connect each to a main character in the story. They worked in small groups to confer ideas with one another and decide on the connections they could make.
Social Studies
World War I Simulation
In US History we are doing a World War I Simulation as an introduction to World War I. Students are divided into six groups representing the six major countries involved in WWI. They will each have to take on a diplomatic role and are given vague background information as well as a confidential data sheet that pertains to their own country and guides their actions and responses throughout the simulation. They will have to strike alliances, respond to subterfuge and make decisions that protects their national interests while preserving national pride. This is a really fun way for students to get introduced to WWI.
Humanities
Painting Prodigies in Creative Arts
Creative Arts 1 students got to try their hand at some landscape painting. Congrats to everyone who made our classroom Wall-of-Fame!
Science
Exploding Pumpkins!
On 10/31, a few science teachers made a “big explosion” throughout the day! They reacted calcium carbide with water to create calcium hydroxide and acetylene gas. They then lit that gas on fire to combust the acetylene gas to produce carbon dioxide, water vapor, and an explosion to blow out a pre-carved face of a pumpkin! If your student has any of the following teachers, be sure to ask them how it was: Mr. Birdsell, Mrs. Edlund, Mr. Neal, and Mrs. White!
The Art in Science
This month Chemistry in the Community students investigated the chemistry of paint. They used a series of chemical reactions to make their own paint base, then added metal compounds for pigment. Check out their science masterpieces here!

Fun in Foods
Students in Foods and Nutrition I have been cooking and trying something new 2 times a week. A few weeks ago, students were learning how to substitute nutrient dense foods into existing recipes. We made pasta with homemade greek yogurt, spinach, and avocado sauce. You'll see some samples of their Best "Dressed" work with greek yogurt maple muffins as well as the recipe. Enjoy! Lastly, students documented all the food they ate in a weekend to measure out the grams of sugar consumed. This really opened their eyes to how much hidden sugar is in foods!
