Principal's Message
Sterling families,
Last night was an incredible experience as a Park View cluster. Thank you to so many of you for joining us in celebrating our students and the fine arts! We appreciate the work of our artists, chorus members, and Mrs. Scarboro, Ms. Walsh, and Mrs. Ajima for preparing for the night!
This weekend marks the beginning of Spring Break for students. There will be no school for students from Monday, March 25, through Friday, March 29. All students return on Monday, April 1. That week will conclude the third quarter, and there will be a Teacher Workday on Friday, April 5. During that workday, teachers will work to finalize student grades for the marking period.
Sincerely,
Jennifer M. Short, Principal

Safety Patrols
Our fifth grade safety patrols were recently inducted during a ceremony with Deputy Gutierrez. We appreciate our patrols and their daily service!
INOVA Healthy Plate Club
Our second and third graders have been learning all they can about healthy eating and healthy lifestyles under the guidance of our partners at INOVA. They've found healthy eating can be delicious too!
- Learned why it’s best to avoid eating and drinking too much sugar.
- Compared popular beverages to find which ones were “everyday drinks” and “sometimes drinks”
The recipe this week was Brussels Sprout Chips.
The recipe this week was a stir fry.
The students tried broccoli raw and cooked in a stir fry with rice, onions, eggs, and a homemade marinade.
SPOTlight Students of the Month
These six students represent each grade level and were selected as their grade's SPOTlight Student of the Month for consistently displaying safe, polite, on-task, and trustworthy behavior. Way to go!

Specialists' News
ART NEWS
In third grade, we began work on a zentangle design. Students are focusing on the positive space of their design and adding patterns. Later they will add color using the warm and color groups to define their two spaces. In Kindergarten, we recently finished a collage of a butterfly in a garden after reading about the butterfly life cycle. Pictured is a student showing her classmate how to draw a ladybug. Some of the butterflies, along with many other works by Sterling students, were on display at the Park View High School Cluster Fine Arts Night on March 20th to celebrate Youth Art Month.

Library News
Thank you to everybody who came out and supported our Book Fair! The money we earned goes directly back into our school with the purchase of materials and special programs.
March brings spring fever to the library! We are exploring new book titles, reading our Virginia Reader's Choice selections (we will be voting on our favorite in April!), learning about the changing weather patterns, and preparing for an upcoming author visit. After spring break, we will begin our Poetry Month celebration-Mrs. Burel

MUSIC NEWS
Happy Music in our Schools Month! We kicked off our celebration with a performance of the musical, The Bear Went Over the Mountain, by our amazing first graders. They worked very hard memorizing songs and speaking lines and we are so proud of them. Our fourth and fifth grade chorus performed last night with groups from the other schools in the Park View Cluster. It is always an amazing night!

PE NEWS
In P.E. this month, students had a chance to experience multicultural games and reflect on some similarities and differences from American games. Sterling is such a diverse school, and we love hearing students taking pride in their heritage and backgrounds. Some of those games include: El raton y el gato (Puerto Rico), Bocce ball (Italy), Teanh Prot (Cambodia), Kitchen Ball (Botswana), and many more! Additionally, the children learned about Nutrition and some of the healthy and unhealthy food and drinks we consume. Don't forget the most important nutrient - WATER!

SEARCH NEWS
Stretching our brain power continues! In SEARCH, kindergarteners got a chance to use their creative thinking skills by turning an ordinary black dot into something new. During another lesson together, they sharpened their spatial reasoning skills by solving a tricky five-piece puzzle. This puzzle challenged them to create a square out of a certain number of puzzle pieces. First grade also got a chance to solve this puzzle too along with a different puzzle involving snowflakes and even/odd numbers. Second grade enjoyed playing “Smart Farmer”, where they used their spatial reasoning skills to separate the animals by type using fences. Another lesson focused on making riddles with rhyming words. Mrs. Rodeffer and I have been working hard to finish third grade portfolio lessons. We both have been so impressed with their drive and determination to tackle these various challenges.
