STAFF SPOTLIGHT--MR. ALLEN STEELE
I graduated from Hastings High School. I then attended GRCC for tool and dye.
While I was going to college, I started to get into wood working, which is something my dad and grandpa taught me to do early in life. I realized that I should be doing something I loved. So I decided to stop going to college for tool and dye and got a job at a wood shop instead.
My first job was at a company that built whole jewelry stores.
I continued to do that for 15 years, learning more as time went on. I gained experience just by doing it and getting feedback from my boss and co-workers.
That job required me to learn more skills such as working with solid surface materials, such as countertops and desk fronts. Also thermal forming, which consists of making jigs and forming that to your jig. This is a way to create a unique and beautiful product that makes your every day cabinet or desk look like a piece of art.
During all of my years, I also did some side jobs and picked up more skills. Such as, building houses, decks, kitchen remodels, installing doors/windows, roofing houses, plumbing, electrical work. Pretty much anything I needed to do.
Which led me to becoming a finishing carpenter for a home building business. I then transitioned to lead builder/contractor for that company. That requires not just the knowledge I learned over the years, but I needed to lead teams, talk with customers, deal with trades, and learn to multitask with all of those things and do my own work. I had to make sure all of the work was done to the exact specs that were in all of the house plans.
Everything I’ve done throughout my professional life has been through working hard and knowing I wanted to get better at wood working. It has been a lot of trial and errors.
I am currently the Wood working teacher at WHS.
In my free time I like to fish.
I am proud to be a Panther because I love teaching the kids and watching them put their skills to use in the real world.

WHAT'S UP IN ART 1?
Before break, Art I students wrapped up a three and a half week long painting project. The works they created are impressive and a reflection of their hard work and artistic growth.

This award is not only given to coaches that have successfully teams, but to those that represent the school, community, and the game in a positive, educational-based manner.

DUAL ENROLLMENT SEMESTER 1 SUCCESS RATE!
DUAL ENROLLMENT REMINDERS FOR SEMESTER 2
THESE REMINDERS WILL BE REVIEWED WITH ALL DUAL ENROLLED STUDENTS MONDAY. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND ONE OF TWO SESSIONS EITHER PERIOD 3 OR 5.
Every dual enrolled class that the student is registered for and the grades received for become a part of the student’s college record. Low or failing grades will affect the student’s ability to earn potential scholarships for college after high school.
Students are expected to be in their dual enrollment classes every day and on time. If for any reason a student needs to be absent from a dual enrolled class, the student needs to make the college teacher aware in advance. The student always has the college teacher’s contact information.
Students are expected to remain in the media center or the online lab for the entire time they are scheduled for their dual enrolled class. Students do not have permission to leave to go to a locker, get food, roam the halls, etc. Students are expected to be working on their dual enrolled course FIRST. If there is no work to complete for the dual enrolled course, students can work on other course work. If a student needs to leave the media center or the online lab during their dual enrollment time, they must get permission from Mrs. Brant or the main office.
While in the media center, students are not permitted to be laying on the couches, the floor, or laying on each other. This is a shared space for both students and adults. Students should be seated upright and working.
Students are expected to email or talk to their college teacher everytime they have questions or concerns. Students should know how to reach the instructor.
Students earning less than a C in a dual enrolled course are not permitted to take a dual enrolled course the following semester at the expense of the school district. They are also required to reimburse the district for the cost of the course.
Students who are not able to maintain positive school attendance with a 3.0 GPA or higher are not permitted to dual enroll.
Students are never permitted to drop their dual enrolled class without talking to the counseling office first. If a student feels that they are doing poorly in a dual enrolled class, after emailing the college teacher, the student should come to the counseling office to discuss.
Students who withdraw from the college course outside of the allowable window will be expected to reimburse the district for the cost of the course. These students will not be permitted to dual enroll the following semester at the cost of the district.
Students are expected to keep parents up to speed on their grade in the dual enrolled class. There should be no surprises at the end of the semester regarding the student’s grade.
Students are required to show their dual enrolled grade to Mrs.Tyler every 3 weeks in the counseling office when it is announced that it must be reviewed. If a student is in danger of failing a dual enrolled class at a grade check, a letter will be mailed home and the student will meet with Mrs. Dawson to discuss the course.
If the school rents the textbook for the dual enrolled class, the student must return the book at the end of the semester. Costs of textbooks will be reimbursed at the end of the semester if the class is passed. Students must complete a reimbursement form and provide a copy of the receipt from purchase.
Any speeches or assessments that must be done for the college class must be done during the time of the college class. Students are not permitted to come out of other classes at WHS to work on their dual enrolled course.
Dual enrolled classes are not high school classes. The ownership of the class is on the student. The parent will not be contacted by the college if the student has a failing grade. The parent is not able to obtain any information from the college regarding the student's grade or progress.
CAN YOU HELP FUNDRAISE FOR 2026 PROM?
CONGRATULATIONS DECEMBER 2024 STUDENTS OF THE MONTH!
FRESHMAN--CHLOE WOMAC!
I don't have any siblings and I live with both my mom and my dad! They are funny and kind parents who always encourage me to do my best!
My favorite classes are art or spanish! I enjoy both of these things a lot and getting to do them in school is amazing! Art is one of my main hobbies!
I like all of my teachers and try not to pick favorites! :)
I am in winter cheer and science olympiad! :D
In my free time I usually try to do some art or watch a show with my parents! If not that then I chill to some music or read a book!
I plan on going to college! I'm not totally sure where yet but yes!
I am proud to be a WHS Panther because all of the students and staff here are supportive of others and help each other out when its needed!
FRESHMAN--ANNABELLA SCHADLER!
I’ve four siblings, one older brother and three sisters. Two of them are the oldest and one of them is the youngest. I have two nephews who are one year old and I have another nephew coming this month. I live with my parents and my little sister.
My favorite class has to be history because I love learning about the past and all of the cool stuff that happened before us.
My favorite teacher is Mrs. Hunt because I love how she helps us with our art project and she is a cool person to talk to.
I was in cheerleading during football season but I might do it next year in 10th grade.
During my free time, I usually just go to my room to watch my favorite shows like Outer Banks, Stranger Things, and Shameless or just make bracelets.
The plans after high school are to move to North or South Carolina and try to get into a college there and then I’ll become a Marine Biologist.
The reason why I’m proud of being a Panther is because all of the staff here are so nice and Watervliet is where I met all of my friends.
SOPHOMORE--MAYCIE MEDLIN!
My family consists of my mom, stepdad, and little sisters Mattie and Mickinley. I also have a brother, Rhett. My favorite class has been ceramics. I love ceramics because I love art and love to use my creative mind to bring things to life. Art is also one of my favorite hobbies. My favorite teacher is probably Mr. Andrews. He makes history class fun and interesting and he's just a really awesome teacher. This year I participated in my first year of cross country and plan to either do track or golf in the spring. In my free time I love to do art, go to the gym, shop, hunt, travel, and drive my car around. After high school, I don't know yet but I plan to travel a lot and move to Florida by the beach. I've also found a huge interest in photography. I'm proud to be a WHS Panther because the school provides great opportunities for me!
SOPHOMORE--AIDEN WOLFORD!
The people in my family are very hard workers and work long hours to provide for me and my brothers and i admire there work ethics and the amount of work they put into there jobs.
My favorite class has been 4th hour AP Government. It's is a class I definitely recommend if you like history. It has a great teacher for it. It's a good class to learn about the government of your country.
My favorite teacher has been Mr Linderman. Being able to talk to him about the basketball season and be able to get the advice I need, makes me respect him and what he does. He also teaches history-- my favorite subject.
I participate in 3 high school sports: football, basketball, baseball.
In my free time I like to spend time with my friends and play sports.
After high school I would like to further my education at a 4 year university.
I am proud to be a WHS student because this has been the school I have been to my entire life and they have always treated me well and have given me many memories i will never forget.
JUNIOR--EZEQUIEL CARDOZO-AVILES!
My family consists of my parents and siblings. Two of my siblings attend college while another is in middle school. I have liked all my classes even if some days are difficult but my favorite has been Chemistry. I like Chemistry because I have learned the subject well and don't struggle with it. I have multiple favorite teachers. Mrs. Irmen teaches very well and engages with the class so no kid is struggling. Mr. Weber has funny jokes that make my day. He is also my coach in the fall. Mr. Trembley is always encouraging us to do our best. He is a nice person and a great teacher. In the fall, I run cross country, while in the spring I run track. In my free time I listen to music, run, and play video games. After high school I would like to attend a college or trade school. I am proud to be a WHS Panther because of how encouraging the teachers to give us a bright future.
JUNIOR--KENDAL KIEFER!
The people in my family are very important to me. I live with my mom, dad, brother, and three four fur babies. My mom and dad are both very hardworking as well as my brother. My favorite class this year has been Ms. Irmen's Chemistry class because she is very easy to talk to and I feel she makes personal connections with her students which helps us trust her and learn from her more. Also her class is very fun and we do lots of experiments. My favorite teacher would have to be Coach Tremblay, he is a very good supporter and he is always there when I need to talk. He encourages me and pushes me to be the best version of myself. I play varsity softball and I have been since the end of my freshman year. I am a part of the Student Council. In my free time I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, watching shows and movies, playing with my animals, and I like to work on hitting and fielding in softball. After High School I plan to go to Ferris State or Western Michigan to study criminology and I plan to move to a city after college and become a homicide detective. I am proud to be a Watervliet Panther because our school offers things that can help all of us in the future. I do dual enrollment, but there are many options such as Early Middle College, Dual Enrollment, and Vo Tech, and more. We also have many clubs and sports programs. Another reason I’m a proud panther is because of the family that we have in the school, we are always there for each other.
SENIOR--KIM ROMERO-CHAIREZ!
My family consists of my parents, two sisters, and nephew. My parents are supportive of everything I do and have always encouraged me to pursue higher education. While my younger sister, Daniella, is accomplished in the classroom and outside. She is currently taking Geometry as an 8th grader and accompanies the high school team during the summer cross-country practices.
My favorite class this year is AP Biology because we've done labs that are over the concepts we are learning but in a fun way! An example is our fruit loop lab that was over natural selection. When we removed a handful of Fruit Loops from the bowl it represented a tsunami and bottleneck, where a population drastically reduces to a nonselective disaster.
Mrs.O'Toole has become one of my favorite teachers. I had her class during my sophomore Biology and AP Biology this year. I have even had the opportunity to work pancake breakfasts, blood drives, and NHS events with her. She is an extremely kind teacher and tries her best to make labs enjoyable for us students. Also wanted to thank Mr. Andrews for being open to helping me with my dual enrollment government and history-related courses. He teaches history in an engaging way and I miss the chair trenches activity in class.
The sports I've participated in are cross country and track and field. Aside from athletics, I've been involved in many extracurriculars. I am President of the Virtue Club where we had the opportunity to decorate letters to people in the hospital for the holidays. I am the secretary for Watervliet National Honor Society and asking people at lunchtime to sign up for the blood drive can be enjoyable since your blood can save three lives! I am also in the Science Olympiad where my partner Jaylie and I won 1st at regionals in Forensics qualifying us to state last year!
In my free time, I enjoy going on runs with my younger sister and father. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family!
After high school, I will be studying a double major in biology and chemistry at Washington University in St Louis on a full-ride scholarship on behalf of Questbridge, a nonprofit that connects top high-achieving low-income students in the U.S. to top universities. I was one of the 80 students out of 25,500 applicants and 7,288 finalists to match to WashU. I recommend that juniors apply to their Questbridge College Prep Scholars program for juniors which gives resources (such as program scholarships, $1,000 for laptop/college prep resources, and attending a conference) to get into a T-25 university. After university, I plan to attend a PhD Medical Scientist Program to research diseases and treatments.
I am proud to be a Watervliet Panther because of all of the opportunities offered that have allowed me to grow and succeed!
SENIOR--ADRIAN FLORES!
My favorite class as of right now, I would have to say is weightlifting.
My favorite teachers are: Teacher/Coach Mr.Trembley and Joe Isbrecht.
A sport I wanted to do is football and a sport I participated in is wrestling.
In my free time, I like to create art.
I plan on enlisting in a branch particularly The Navy.
I have enjoyed being a WHS Panther.
