Total Solar Eclipse Information for Monday, April 8th
We always put the safety and welfare of our school community first. Which is why Burleson ISD will be closed on Monday, April 8, 2024.
On Monday, April 8, all of the Metroplex will see a total solar eclipse. As many of you may already know, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun. A total solar eclipse happens when the moon completely blocks the sun, creating the “Ring of Fire.” Total solar eclipses happen over any specific location about every 375 years. The last total solar eclipse anywhere in Texas happened in 1900. Texas has been dubbed the best state to view the 2024 total eclipse because of our weather and development. As a result, Texas will see a large number of people coming here to see this rare, natural phenomenon.
State and county emergency management teams tell us North Texas alone will see an influx of well over 1 million people. Hotels throughout North Texas have reported they are completely booked for this event. The predicted result will be severe traffic congestion as people jockey for prime viewing positions, overloaded cell tower services, and strained emergency response infrastructure.
We are told that areas in the path of the 2017 total solar eclipse saw highways and rural routes shut down for hours. Cars ran out of gas and were stranded. Accidents multiplied without emergency response. Hospitals were overwhelmed with incidents.
The Texas School Safety Center cautions school districts to consider whether to have school—especially districts within the path of totality. Burleson ISD is in that path. We cannot in good conscience put our young drivers and busses onto the roads given what is being predicted. The risk is too great that accidents will happen, vehicles will be stranded, and emergency services will be overwhelmed.
The good news is that we will not have to make up this day later. Due to the mild winter, our schedule has enough cushion built in. So, stay home on the 8th. Stay safe. And enjoy a rare beautiful show of nature.
Spring Picture Day Tuesday, April 9th

Counselor Corner
March Guidance:
As we move into the Spring, we see more tutoring and testing. Both teachers and students are working hard to prepare for end-of-year assessments. This is the time of year when stress levels can be higher. March guidance will focus on effort, perseverance, and strategies for coping with stress/anxiety. We will also take a special look at nutrition, brain, and sleep awareness.
