Brookside Middle School
September 2024 Newsletter
A Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
The start to the 2024-2025 school year at Brookside Middle School has been exciting and successful! We’re thrilled to have students back in our classrooms and hallways with positive energy, making our school a great place to be. Over the past 2 weeks, our staff has worked diligently with our students to establish daily routines, building & classroom procedures, as well as directly and explicitly teaching our students the schoolwide positive behaviors that we expect of all students at BMS.
Beginning next week, students will begin taking the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments in 7th & 8th Grade Math & Reading as well as 8th Grade Science. Our purpose for administering the MAP assessments is to:
Collect data that our team of educators use to plan & provide the highest quality instruction.
Universally screen all students to identify those who are in need of enrichment or intervention support.
Accurately measure a student’s academic growth over time.
This school year, Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City Schools is partnering with the Cleveland Brown’s Stay In The Game Network to promote positive school attendance habits for our students and families. The kick off to this partnership begins with Attendance Awareness Month during the month of September. Each building in our district will be completing simple activities aimed to encourage students to attend school regularly and to emphasize its importance on student learning outcomes. Check out the Stay In The Game Network website to learn more!
I’d like to thank each family for all of your assistance and support with preparing your child for the start of the school year. We value the positive, working relationships our school builds with each family and look forward to serving you and your child this school year. Please feel free to give our Main Office a call at (440) 949-4228 or send me an email at ndoehr@sheffieldschools.org should there be anything we can be of assistance.
Yours In Education,
Mr. Nick Doehr - BMS Principal

New Process for Free & Reduced Lunch Application, Lunch Payment, & Fees
In the past, parents have used Pay For It to pay for student meals online. This year the district is simplifying this process and others for parents needing to pay for lunch, school fees and even apply for free and reduced lunches.
If you have a Pay For It account already, you will be directed to the new Pay Schools site. The new system already has your information, so you can update any new information if necessary. Parents will need your child’s student ID number to log in. If you have never had an account, you will need to create an account.
On the new site parents will be able to place money into their child’s lunch account, pay for any applicable school fees, and apply for free and reduced lunch. Please complete the free and reduced application regardless of your status, as the district will benefit from this submission. The Pay Schools site and our district food service web page have resources to help you with these processes.

Cell Phone Policy
BMS students are not permitted to use their cell phones during the school day. A smart watch is considered an extension of a student’s cell phone and is also not permitted to be used during the school day. All students are required to keep their cell phones stored in their backpack inside of their locker for the duration of the school day. If you have any questions regarding the cell phone policy, please contact Mr. Doehr.
Leaving & Returning to School, Appointments & Early Dismissal
Whenever it is possible, we kindly ask all families to make appointments for their students outside of regular school hours. If it is necessary to schedule appointments during the school day, your assistance with arranging the appointment to miss the least amount of the school day is appreciated. We ask that all families follow the points below.
- Students should turn in a written note into the Main Office that indicates the time of the day the student will be leaving school. This ensures the student will be ready for pick up without interruption to classroom instruction.
- Students with an early dismissal should be picked up from the Main Office by 2:00pm. This ensures families are clear of the Main Entrance of the building prior to school buses arriving for dismissal.
- In the event of an unplanned circumstance, please call our Main Office if you need to pick up your child from the Main Office after 2:00pm to make pick up arrangements.
- The parent/guardian of the student is required to complete the sign-in/sign-out sheet outside of the Main Office when dropping off/picking up their student during the school day.
