Marysville Message
March 15th, 2024
Dear Marysville Families,
Happy Sunny Friday.
What a delightful Spring day we had.
A huge thank you to the Marysville Family Association for another Popcorn Friday. They are a lot of work, but always much enjoyed. Thanks to everyone that prepared the popcorn. I'm so glad the weather cooperated for us! I love seeing families and students gathering together at school.
This week we hosted our first Kindergarten Connect Event. We are looking forward to continuing to welcome our incoming Marysville students. All neighborhood children that will be 5 years old by September 1, 2024 are welcome to enroll for Marysville Kindergarten in person in the Marysville School Office or online at the PPS enrollment website
This Saturday Marysville will be hosting the Regional Oregon Battle of the Books tournament. We wish our Marysville winning team, "The Bigger Books" the best of luck!
We are honored that State Representative Khanh Pham will be attending to welcome the teams and kick off the tournament. Thanks also to Catherine Tucker for all of her work organizing and promoting this wonderful event.
We have one more week of school before Spring Break. There will be no school the week of March 25th - March 29th.
Racial Slur Use
Our administration was recently informed of an incident in which a student used a racial slur towards a student of color in a snapchat message. We will investigate and respond in line with district policies, but I also want to take this opportunity to emphasize our values.
Hate is not tolerated nor accepted at Marysville. It is our commitment to equality and social justice that binds us together and keeps our community strong.
Hate-based speech has the potential to inflict unique damage and harm. If your student would like to speak to a trusted adult about the inappropriate language that was seen, feel free to reach out to a member of our counseling team:
Sakura Hamada, shamada@pps.net
Hang Jones, hjones@pps.net
This incident is an affront to our district’s core values of racial equity, social justice, student and staff safety, and inclusion. Racist acts have no place in our community and will not be tolerated. I can always be reached at cmurray2@pps.net if you wish to discuss this further.
Although not specifically district policy, one thing we strongly suggest to support student safety is for families to closely monitor or restrict snapchat and other social media apps used by your child.
Sincerely,
Cathy Murray
Marysville Principal
