Food Drive begins this week!
The Siskiyou School has a tradition during this time of year, donating to the Ashland Food Bank. The food drive starts Tuesday, November 12 and will end on Tuesday morning, November 26. Students are asked to bring non-perishable food items: canned food, packaged food, and even personal hygiene and cleaning products. While our 5th grade, the Butterfly Class, spearheads the food collection and is responsible for delivering our gifts to the food bank, each classroom has a collection box.
What if every student brought us several items over the next weeks of the food drive? Let's make the season bright for those hungry in our community!

Thanksgiving Centerpieces from the ACORN classes
Once again, the ACORN classes will be making and selling Thanksgiving Centerpieces with real pumpkins filled with fresh flowers, greenery, and berries. They will be ready for pick up Monday, Nov. 25 & Tuesday, Nov. 26. The centerpieces will be a $20 per pumpkin. Looking for a Costume Closet Keeper
Do you like organizing and keeping things tidy? We're looking for a parent or two to take on the task of gatekeeper of our Costume Closet. The Costume Closet is a storage unit for the school that holds costumes, props, and set pieces. The keeper is the important individual(s) that makes sure it stays tidy and neat, checking in after each class play to return costumes to their proper place and making decisions on what pieces need to be kept for future plays and what things need to be let go. It's a big job, but very rewarding and important. If interested, please let Kristin know at kristin.beers@siskiyouschool.org. Thank you!
OBOB Kick-off Meeting
Siskiyou School OBOB'ers! If your kiddo signed up for Battle of the Books this year, they are invited to a kickoff party this Thursday after school in Pine Hall, 3:15-4:15. Parents are encouraged to come too! I am excited to celebrate these awesome readers and get them started with some fun examples of what a battle might look like and other fun kickoff events.
Please be sure and RSVP to the email that was sent out to OBOB participants this last Friday by Amy Bull.
Handwork - Ms. Bower
HANDWORK
The Handwork program is humming along nicely with busy and hands and full hearts! We accomplish so much in each class!
First grade: All the children are casting on and knitting! All of the horsey reins are just about done!
Second grade: All the children are now knitting AND purling! And so begins the long journey of knitting the Handwork bag.
Third grade: Just about all of the Handwork bags are completed and we’ve entered the fun world of crocheting with chicken feet and magic circles!
Fourth grade: 1-3, 2-4, except on the downhill side – that’s cross stitch in a nut shell. We are well on our way with our pin cushions.
Fifth grade: Circular knitting has begun! Hats and gauntlets are taking shape.
Sixth grade: Hand sewn felt balls with embroidered names are almost all done. Next up, the elephant, my absolute FAVORITE project in the entire eight year span!
Seventh grade: We’ve completed our first block and the 16” dolls are coming together.
Eighth grade: Fabric has been chosen for our pillow cases. The pieces have been cut. Next we’ll begin to learn the basics of using a sewing machine and experience first had the practicality and convenience of the industrial revolution!
In a world of quick gratification, our Handwork classes slow everything down and help us appreciation a calmer and deliberate stretch of time. Each class builds on the one before. Sometimes it takes months to complete one project! Sometimes it’s one project in an entire year. I find such joy and grounding in all of my personal Handwork projects. I hope to bring that feeling of satisfaction and completion to all of the children of the Siskiyou School.
~Cynthia Bower
