In an effort to assist school districts in implementing safety initiatives more effectively, Region 3 will provide relevant school safety guidance, resources, training opportunities, professional development, technical assistance and TEA updates.

REMINDER – Upcoming Deadline: Gun-Free Schools (GFS) Reports

The due date for the district and campus GFS reports is June 29, 2021.

The Gun-Free Schools (GFS) Report for 2020-2021 is now available under the Compliance Reports tab on eGrants.

Submission of the Gun-Free Schools Report is required of all LEAs that request any federal funds in 2021-2022 for any of the programs authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). This includes any program in the ESSA Consolidated, School Improvement, and Rural and Low-Income Schools grant applications. If an LEA does not submit its Gun-Free Schools Reports, TEA cannot issue NOGAs for the LEA’s federal grants.

Safe and Supportive Schools Program (SSSP) Surveys

Districts should collect and maintain SSSP team information and data for the 2020-2021 school year for activities that occurred from September 1, 2020 through August 31, 2021.

TEA will send a Qualtrics survey requesting information to Superintendents in November 2021.

This workshop is designed to provide districts and campuses with an understanding of the Safe and Supportive Schools Program (SSSP) that is required by SB11. Processes, tools and strategies necessary to plan and begin implementation of an SSSP will be reviewed. Register here.

AS+K About Suicide to Save a Life-Gatekeeper Training

AS+K About Suicide To Save A Life provides participants with an overview of the basic epidemiology of suicide and suicidal behavior, including risk and protective factors. In this course, participants are trained to recognize warning signs-behaviors and characteristics that might indicate elevated risk for suicidal behavior-and the initial intervention steps to support a person they think might be at risk for suicide.

On June 29, 2021, the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) will be hosting a free virtual training event on Averting Targeted School Violence: A U.S. Secret Service Analysis of Plots Against Schools from 11:00 AM -2:30 PM CT.

FY 2021 Preventing School Violence: STOP School Violence Program Grant

Through this opportunity, the Bureau of Justice Assistance is seeking applications for funding under the Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Grant Program.

The STOP School Violence Grant Program is designed to improve K-12 school security by providing students and teachers with the tools they need to recognize, respond quickly to, and help prevent acts of violence and ensure a positive school climate.

REMS is providing several free virtual trainings and resources, covering a wide range of topics.

Modalities include the following (links are clickable):

Online Courses — self-paced virtual trainings that generate certificates upon completion;
Virtual Trainings by Request — interactive and dynamic virtual trainings delivered to your education agency by REMS TA Center’s trainers, available by request; and
Specialized Training Packages (K-12 only) — materials for school safety teams or school safety leaders to use to learn on their own or deliver trainings to colleagues and their sites.
