Positivity Project Trait of the Week!
Dear Families,
This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Social Intelligence. Social intelligence means understanding other people's thoughts and feelings and why they act the way they do.
Social intelligence helps us build good relationships by being aware of others’ emotions and behaviors. It is different from "book smarts" and grows with experience. It also allows people to connect, form friendships, and protect themselves from being taken advantage of. It also helps us read facial expressions and understand what motivates others.
To practice and encourage the character strength of social intelligence at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!

Happy Chinese New Year!
January 29, 2025
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most vibrant cultural celebrations. Deeply rooted in Chinese traditions, this festival is a time of joy, togetherness, and colorful festivities that last for several days. It’s a celebration of new beginnings and cherished customs.
In 2025, Chinese New Year takes on a special significance as it ushers in the Year of the Snake—a symbol of wisdom, grace, and transformation in Chinese culture.

Vaping Detection Initiative
The Avondale Board of Education has approved a contract with Zebra K9 to bring a certified vape detection K9 team to our middle and high schools from January 27 through May 2025. This initiative aims to deter vaping and maintain a focused, safe learning environment. The K9 team will visit sporadically each month, with dates kept random, and will not visit elementary schools.
For more information on the dangers of vaping, we encourage families to review the resources from Parents Against Vaping. Thank you for supporting our efforts to ensure a healthy environment for all students.

Radon testing is important to prevent lung cancer. It is very common in Michigan basements.
In an effort to protect the health of its residents, Oakland County Health Division is now providing free radon test kits to residents year-round, thanks to the support of the Board of Commissioners. These kits, previously discounted during National Radon Action Month in January, can be picked up at Health Division offices in Pontiac and Southfield, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
