We're in this T.O.G.E.T.H.E.R!
Your Help is Needed - Support Central's All-Night Graduation Party!
Calling all Central supporters! We need your help to create a memorable night for our graduating seniors. The Central All-Night Graduation Party will take place after graduation on Tuesday, June 4, at Central. The party will have fun, food, music, games, prizes and is free for our seniors. Registration is open now.
You can help us in two ways: volunteering or donating.
If you are the parent of a first-year, sophomore, or junior at Central, pay it forward for our senior families and sign-up to volunteer for the time and task that you prefer. Volunteer here!
The party depends on donations from generous supporters to pay for food, entertainment, security, and prizes. A donation of $75 covers one senior's cost. Every dollar counts. Donate here!
Let's make this night amazing for our seniors!
Central Students invited to South Korea! Meeting Next Week – Please RSVP
Dear Central families,
We’re going to South Korea in Spring 2025, and your Central 9th - 11th grader is invited! Harding High School and Central High School are joining together to offer this opportunity!
We’re excited to tell you more about the trip we’re planning with EF Tours, our educational travel partner, at our virtual informational webinar next week on Tuesday, May 21st. Please be sure to register in order to receive the webinar link: https://bit.ly/4bgCnM3
When students travel, they expand their knowledge of the world around them, discover more about themselves, and grow more confident. These skills are critical for creating the global citizens of tomorrow, and we would love to have your student join us on this adventure.
In this virtual info session (using GoogleMeet), we’ll talk about:
- How this opportunity will benefit your student
- What we’ll see and do on our trip
- Everything that’s included in this experience
- How your child can earn academic credit
- How we’re keeping this safe and affordable
How to enroll on this trip (before it fills up!) during EF’s risk-free enrollment period
and who we are as trip leaders + our travel expectations
There are limited spots on this trip, so we would love to have you attend this meeting to learn more about this exciting opportunity!
Thanks,
Erik Brandt & Carrie Petroske
Erik.Brandt@spps.org, Carrie.Petroske@spps.org
Erik Brandt and Carrie Petroske are long-time English teachers at Harding High School who have a shared passion for travel and they have led multiple overseas trips for SPPS together.

Great Things Happen at Central!
On April 24th, Central was honored to host a Minnesota District Court Oral Argument live in the Mary Mackbee Auditorium. Students and staff were able to listen in on the oral argument of State v. Zetterwall. It is safe to say that we all learned a lot about this particular court case, but also about the judicial branch and rule of law from the judges during Q & A time after the oral argument.
Several students helped make the day happen serving as guides to the legal professionals as well as hosting a meet & greet for the judges and helping set up for the event as well as take down. Central could not have hosted such an event like this without the help of our students! Thank you!
Culinary Arts: Celebrating the joy, comfort, and cultural significance of Italy, Milan, and Roma by making a homemade Spaghetti Marinara and Fresh Garlic Knots.
Students in Mr. Bastian’s Medical Careers class were able to participate in a field trip to Sterilmed, part of the Johnson & Johnson family of Companies. Sterilmed is a medical device company that specializes in the reprocessing of single-use medical devices helping health systems reduce expenses and decrease environmental impact.
As part of the trip, students were able to learn about the process of developing medical devices as well as prescription drugs and the complexities surrounding their development through hands on activities. Students were able to learn about the science and technology of cardiac arrhythmia through hands on experience with Diagnostic Catheters which are used to produce 3D imaging of the Heart and Therapeutic Ablation Catheters used to treat Afib or atrial fibrillation, a type of arrhythmia, or abnormal heartbeat.
Students also had the opportunity to meet with a variety of different professionals that work in collaboration with Sterilmed. These professionals included Sterilmed Scientists, Supply Chain Quality Engineers, and Supply Chain Managers; New Technology Managers and Sales Directors from Biosense Webster; Medical Science Liaisons specializing in Cardiovascular system and a Cardiovascular Surgeon with Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute.
We also toured the Jabil Manufacturing site that works in collaboration with Sterilmed. Jabil specializes in the sterilization and repurposing of these medical devices.
Mr. Clemetson's Construction Systems and Design students have been building nine toolsheds to be sold to sustain future projects.
Central's Anatomy and Physiology classes perform animal dissections in which they explore the body's organs, their functions, and their characteristics!
Is there a future educator in your life??👨🏻🏫
Do you know of a current 9th - 11th grade student who...
...you think would make an amazing educator someday?
...loves to examine issues of equity, justice, and the future?
...is ready to challenge themselves with an engaging college-level course next year that involves reading, writing, critical thinking, and visiting and volunteering in elementary schools?
If you know of students who fit ANY (not all) of the above descriptors, I would love it if you could send their names my way! We are looking for more students to take Education Pathway courses next school year. (I will talk with any students who you name.) Click here to nominate a Future Educator
Thank you so much for your support of this new and growing program!
Additional information to share with students:
Each course is 3 (FREE) college credits through Minneapolis College
Semester 1 course: Introduction to Urban Education
Semester 2 course: Multicultural Approaches to Education
We read engaging texts that provoke a lot of critical thinking about education from a lens of equity and justice. We write and discuss ideas to make the future of education work for all students.
We visit other schools and volunteer with elementary students.

Session 2: July 22– August 13th, 2024
Are you Registered for Summer Learning?
If you know or think you are missing credits for graduation, you are probably signed up for summer school.
We encourage our Central students to take advantage of the opportunity in summer to make up credits needed for graduation now instead of waiting for “a better time.” Central High School counselors are reviewing graduation progress and will be referring students for summer school in addition to adding courses that students need due to credit deficiencies in previous school years. If students have questions, they should schedule an appointment to see their assigned school counselor.
Summer school is run by the SPPS District not by Central staff and counselors. Students and families will receive detailed information from SPPS Summer Learning Programs and not Central counselors including schedules, locations, transportation and other logistics.

Summer EBT Benefits
The S-EBT is a federally funded program that provides families of qualified school-aged children $40 per month during the summer months to purchase healthy foods while school is not in session. SPPS in-person students who qualify for free or reduced eligibility will qualify for Summer EBT benefits. SPPS online students who are directly certified for free or reduced eligibility will also qualify.
It is critical that the primary parent/guardian contact info in Campus is up to date to ensure that S-EBT benefits are received at the beginning of summer. Parents/guardians will be instructed to reach out to their school’s main office if any updates are needed.
If a student does not currently qualify for free or reduced eligibility, parents/guardians are encouraged to complete the Application for Educational Benefits to see if they qualify.
More info will be shared at spps.org/summerebt, including updates as more info about the program is available from the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

Updated Cell Phone Practices for Classrooms
To avoid the outside distractions caused by cell phones, cell phone use is prohibited in classrooms unless permitted by a teacher for academic purposes. Please help us with the implementation of this practice by not calling your students during the school day and not expecting them to respond to texts during class time. Talk to your children about the importance of focusing while in class and silencing phones and alerts. Here are some resources you may want to use to think about cell phone use and social media.
