A Note from the Principal
The first quarter at Steele has flown by. The staff and students here work hard each day, and I am so excited to see the academic and social and emotional growth we can make together this year.
Again, teachers will share report cards and Fall benchmarking assessments at parent teacher conferences. Conferences are being held on October 23rd and October 29th. Please make sure that you reach out to your child's teacher if you have not scheduled yet, or if you forget your time.
I would like to invite you to the Trunk or Treat night this year that will be held at Galesburg Junior Senior High School on Sunday, October 27th from 5 to 7 p.m. Along with the trunk or treat, the Stakeholder Engagement Committee will have hot dogs, chips, and drinks for families in attendance. If you are available, please join us and meet and greet your school families at this event which always seems to have a wonderful turnout!
Below is the plan for our Red Ribbon Spirit Week at the end of October. For costumes, please remember:
- Costumes must not interfere with learning for the school day
- No masks
- No blood or pretend weapons

Report Cards are now available in Skyward. Log on to see how your child performed on each of the standards. As a reminder, we use a scoring system of 1 to 4.
4: Exceeding on State/District Standards (I'm working on a higher level. I'm working above grade level. I can explain how to do this. I can teach others.)
3: Meeting on State/District Standards (I am right where I need to be. I am working at the expected level. I am working at grade level. I make a few or no mistakes. I can show how I understand.)
2: Developing on State/District Standards (I am starting to understand. Sometimes I need help or an example. I'm almost there. With a little more practice I'll get it.)
1: Beginning on State/District Standards (I am starting to learn this. I can't do it by myself yet. I will work with the teacher and friends. I should practice at home too.)

Pictures From Last Week
We had several pups come through the Kiss-n-Go line during arrival and dismissal to get their pup cup! We plan to repeat this fun event again this school year.
Our kindergarteners and second graders were able to learn about the milking process, the importance of dairy foods in a healthy diets, animal care and food safety practices on a dairy farm, and much more. This was brought to us free of charge from the SouthWest SouthLand Dairy Farmers. They demonstrated how to milk a cow, described how milk goes from the farm to the consumer, and then answered questions from the audience. See the Mobile Dairy Classroom video
Mrs. Gummerson took her classes outside to work on a mosaic chalk designs.
The Carl Sandburg College Hispanic-Latino Student Association visited Steele. They highlighted famous people and the flags from many of the Spanish speaking countries. The college students also taught our Steele Stars a few words in Spanish and the dance to the song, Macarena. We are so thankful for our partnership with Anthony Law and Carl Sandburg College!

How do we grade at the elementary level? We use a standards-based report card instead of a report card with letter grades. Elementary report cards are issued at the end of each grading period. They are intended to give an evaluation of the scholastic achievement and work habits of each child. Parents should examine all cards carefully since each child is rated not only on academic progress, but also progress in development of social attitudes and work habits.
We use a 4,3,2,1 system to assess a student's mastery of standards.
4 = Exceeding State and District Standards
3 = Meeting State and District Standards
2 = Approaching State and District Standards
1 = Not Meeting State and District Standards
