LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
I'm so happy to share some exciting academic changes with you.
- 3rd-8th grade math teachers are using a program called Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) in Mathematics in tandem with our math curriculum. BTC is a set of 14 optimal practices designed to help students become mathematical thinkers and to increase the amount of time students spend thinking. Our 3rd-6th grade teachers and middle school math teacher recently participated in a BTC workshop and they all came back inspired! New practices are integrated slowly and deliberately, but we are very excited about mathematics thinking around here!
- The elementary staff has collaboratively created a new mastery-based report card that we hope will be ready by our first reporting period. We are getting help from the Northwest Regional Data Center (NWRDC), the folks who support student data information systems in the state of Washington, to build the new report card in our Qmlativ system.
- For the third year in a row, secondary students will have an opportunity to earn a seal of biliteracy on their diploma. Students working towards this distinction must meet English graduation requirements and pass an OSPI approved assessment in a world language. They can take this assessment anytime from 9th-12th grade, and they have multiple opportunities to pass it. So far, our students earning the seal of biliteracy have taken the state assessment in Spanish, but we are beginning to offer more choices since we have high school students who are fluent in or have been studying other world languages.
- We have begun to work on a Portrait of a Graduate, which is a consolidated list of the skills and attributes all LISD students will have to be prepared for college, career, and life. We interviewed focus groups of middle and high school students to ask them about their hopes and dreams after graduation and what skills and attributes they think they will need. We asked the LISD staff what their hopes and dreams are for our students and what students will need to learn and we will soon be inviting parents and community members to participate in focus groups to answer the same questions. The real work will begin when we intentionally embed these skills and attributes in our programs and classes, from kindergarten through 12th grade. Be sure to watch for an invitation to be part of a focus group. We want your input!
I hope you have a great weekend!
All my best,
Martha

Recess Volunteers Needed
Community folks - can you commit to one hour a week to help out at the school? We are seeking adult volunteers to monitor elementary recess at 10 am every day of the week. Ideally, we would love up to 5 adults to be able commit consistently to come each week on their chosen day. This would be a huge help for our elementary staff who are currently juggling this duty. Please email Brady Smith, Superintendent, bsmith@lopezislandschool.org, if this is something you can do.
