Schroeder Library Media Center

In November and December we will be promoting reading for pleasure among Schroeder students and challenging them to use some of their holiday break time to read. The goal is for each student to read a book of their choosing by the end of 2018. Thank you to everyone who made a "staff pick" for us to showcase in library displays. You will also notice Schroeder Reads promotional posters in the windows of the library featuring our own Schroeder readers. It is our hope that these will be an entry point into conversations with students about reading. If you are keeping homework light over the holiday season, please consider mentioning to students that you want them to have time to read.

Within learning commons, makerspaces have become synonymous with the modern library. A makerspace is just what it sounds like: a space for making. Makerspaces nurture the exploration, experimentation, and collaboration that should guide the learning commons. Because of this, Education Week writer Marva Hinton claims that students gain confidence and social connections from making. A thoughtfully planned, staffed, and stocked makerspace supports STEAM learners in particular. STEAM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. Hinton says that “in a school library setting...enriching activities [are included] that might otherwise become too rigidly restrained to a single discipline.” This month we will have student volunteers helping introduce the library's new Ozobots, Sphero, Squishy Circuits, and more.
