Shark Scoop
October 2024
Principal, Ms. Jonas
Dear Naples Park Families,
As we near the end of the quarter, this next month promises to be a great one for both learning and fun. Regarding the learning, do you ask your Shark each day after school, “What did you learn today?” As your principal, it is a question I would love for you to ask our NPE Sharks. Teachers share with them daily their learning goals, and how they can get good grades on that goal for each content area. Students knowing what they are trying to learn, as well as how they will be assessed, is a researched high yield strategy to learn rigorously and successfully.
The State of Florida sets up standards for each grade level and each content area. We as a district, school, and as a classroom teacher then get our Sharks to those goals annually. If you want more information about the Florida Standards, you can check it out here: https://www.cpalms.org/Public/search/Standard. I am in awe of the teaching and learning I am seeing here thus far. Again, you can help with that by asking our students what they learned each and every day.
It is good to be at Naples Park Elementary School and together, we are Shark Strong.

Math Minute, Mr. Masiello
Hello Families!
As we dive into our second month of school, our shark students continue to explore and learn new math concepts daily! I love hearing all the wonderful conversations students are participating in around campus regarding math as they explain their thinking to their peers. See below for this months topic which focuses on the Base Ten System. Understanding this system is essential for building a solid math foundation. It helps students grasp place value, addition, subtraction, and even more complex operations such as multiplication and division.
This Month's Monthly Math Topic:
Counselor Corner, Mrs. Ruben
October Character Trait- October, we will be focusing on the monthly character trait of Respect.
Respect means treating other people the way we want to be treated and understanding that all people have value as human beings. Respect means showing consideration for self, others people property and authority. Each month we will be celebrating one student from each class that have shown our CCPS Character Traits at our Shark Leader of the Month ceremony.
School Store- The school store is now open Thursday and Friday morning before school, 7:45 to 8:20am. Students earn FINtastics for following our NPE Expectations
Student Lighthouse Team- We have started our first Student Lighthouse team made up of 4th and 5th grade students who were chosen by their peers. Our student leaders will be helping with Red Ribbon spirt week coming up along with discussing ways to help improve and make NPE an even better place to be!
Red Ribbon Week- Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated October 28th- Nov. 1st. Each day we will have a theme to support and show our personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. A flyer will be sent home with each day’s theme so that students can participate. Please be on the lookout for our Red Ribbon Week Flyer coming home soon!
Can Food Drive- We are also working with Collier Harvest who is a Food bank that support families in Collier County. Please be on the lookout for more information coming home regarding our can food drive. We are looking forward to giving back to our community!

Shark Leader of the Month Character Traits
Literacy Corner- Inspiring Readers, Mrs. Cox
Dear Families!
As we continue our journey in the world of reading. I would like to share some strategies you can use at home to nurture your child’s reading proficiency and foster a love for books. I've also included some fun activities to make reading even more enjoyable!
“Reading is not just an escape; it’s a journey that opens the door to imagination and understanding. When parents share books with their children, they ignite a lifelong love of learning.” — Unknown
Reading Strategies to Implement at Home:
- Preview the Text: Before diving into a book, take a moment to examine the cover, title, and illustrations. Encourage your child to think about what the story might be about. This practice establishes a purpose for reading and piques their curiosity.
- Think-Alouds: Model your thought processes while reading aloud. Share your predictions, insights, and inquiries as you navigate the text. This approach demonstrates how to think critically about the text and encourages your child to do the same.
- Visualizing: Encourage your child to create mental images of what they are reading. After a passage, ask them to describe what they see in their mind. This helps improve comprehension and retention.
- Summarizing: After reading a chapter or a story, ask your child to summarize what they’ve read in their own words. This practice sharpens their focus on main ideas and bolsters their ability to recall information.
- Making Connections: Help your child draw parallels between the text and their own experiences, other literature, or current events. This deepens their understanding and makes reading more meaningful.
- Questioning: Encourage your child to ask questions while they read. You can prompt them with questions like, “What motivated the character’s actions?” or “What predictions can you make about the plot?” This keeps them engaged and thinking critically.
- Discussing Vocabulary: Introduce new words in the context of the story. Discuss their meanings and use them in sentences together. This expands their vocabulary and enhances their reading aptitude.
Engaging Activities to Encourage Reading:
- Book Bingo: Create a bingo card featuring diverse reading prompts (e.g., “Read a book set in another country” or “Explore a poetry anthology”). Track progress together and celebrate completed rows!
- Story Cubes: Craft or purchase story cubes adorned with images or words. Have your child roll the cubes and construct a narrative using the elements that appear.
- Reading Scavenger Hunt: Curate a list of themes or items for your child to discover in their books (e.g., “Identify a character who demonstrates bravery” or “Locate a setting described as enchanting”). This promotes active reading.
- Character Dress-Up Day: Select a character from a book and organize a dress-up day at home. Your child can present the character’s story and explain their choice.
- Create a Book Trailer: After completing a book, encourage your child to produce a brief “book trailer” through drawings, videos, or even a puppet show to summarize and promote the narrative.
Thank you for your commitment to supporting your child’s reading journey at home.
Happy reading!
Attendance & Vacation Planning Matters
Plan ahead! It is important that students are at school, on time, every day! Every moment of learning is important to your child’s development and progress.
*Please note- If your child is absent for any reason, please call the front office at 377-7700 to let us know why your child is absent so we can properly notate that. In addition, all absences are unexcused unless a doctor’s note is provided. Per Florida Statute (1003.26(1)(b), students with 5 unexcused [or validated] absences within a calendar month, or 15 unexcused [or validated] within a 90 day period are considered truant and an attendance meeting may be scheduled with the school and district personnel.
