Superintendent's Memo
It’s been two months since we gathered to welcome the new school year. So much has happened since then, and as we continue on this journey together, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on that special time and remind you of the inspiring message shared by our keynote speaker, Dr. Greg Wells. I’ve linked his Ripple Effect Keynote, hoping it can reconnect you with his insights on resilience, health, and well-being. I know each of you has been hard at work, fully dedicated to supporting students and staff, but as you focus on their needs, remember that your own health and wellness are equally important. Sometimes, a small reminder to prioritize yourself can be the most valuable gift.
November brings a few well-deserved days off for staff. Whether you have one, three, or five days away from your usual routine, I hope you’ll take some time to reconnect with your loved ones or even indulge in some peaceful solitude. Use this time to rest, recharge, and do something that brings you joy—whether it’s a quiet walk, a good book, or quality time with family or friends. Your well-being is foundational not only to you but to the school community we nurture.
Be well,
Michelle

BTPS Celebration and Retirement Event
Buffalo Trail Public Schools Board of Trustees hosted a Celebration and Retirement event on October 22, 2024, in Wainwright, to honour and celebrate dedicated long-service employees, the outstanding support staff award recipient, and retirees of the 2023-2024 school year.
The celebration highlighted employees with milestones of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and an extraordinary 50 years of service. We also recognized the Outstanding Support Staff award recipient, honoured for exceptional service and dedication and celebrated 21 retiring employees, each of whom has made a lasting and invaluable contribution to our schools.
The event brought together over 130 staff members from throughout the division, making for a truly successful evening. Buffalo Trail Public Schools would like to thank all staff for their invaluable contributions and unwavering commitment to our division.
Throughout the year we will spotlight a staff member who will share a book that has inspired or resonated with them. This is a space for personal reflections and insights, where you can discover new perspectives and ideas through the eyes of your peers, find your next great read or simply want to be inspired by others' journeys.
In Spark, John J. Ratey, M.D., presents a groundbreaking exploration of the profound effects of exercise on brain health. Drawing on compelling research and captivating case studies, Ratey argues that aerobic exercise is a powerful tool for enhancing mood, memory, and cognitive function. From improving mental health to combating conditions like ADHD and Alzheimer's, the evidence he presents is both persuasive and inspiring.
Ratey distills his extensive research into several key insights that underscore the critical relationship between exercise and brain function. These takeaways highlight the transformative impact of physical activity on mental health and cognitive performance:
- Exercise as a Brain Booster: Aerobic exercise is shown to enhance cognitive functions, such as memory and learning, by promoting the growth of new neurons and improving brain plasticity. Regular physical activity can lead to sharper intellect and better overall brain health.
- Mental Health Benefits: Ratey emphasizes that exercise acts as a natural antidepressant, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and ADHD. It triggers the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are crucial for mood regulation and emotional well-being.
- Real-World Impact: The case study of Naperville, Illinois ("Zero Hour"), illustrates the transformative effects of integrating physical fitness into education. By prioritizing exercise in the school curriculum, students not only excelled academically but also demonstrated improved mental and emotional health, showcasing the far-reaching benefits of an active lifestyle.
This engaging narrative not only highlights the mind-body connection but also encourages readers to rethink their approach to physical activity. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to understand the transformative power of exercise and its essential role in achieving optimal brain function. Spark is sure to change how you view your workouts—and your mind.

Wellness Corner
As we navigate the busy days ahead in our school division, it’s essential to prioritize our wellness.
Taking time for self-care not only enhances our well-being but also improves our effectiveness in supporting our students. Whether it’s enjoying a brief walk during lunch, engaging in mindfulness practices, or simply connecting with a colleague, those small moments of care can create a big impact.
Did You Know? Regular physical activity can significantly boost your mood and energy levels. Just 30 minutes of exercise a day can increase serotonin levels, which helps alleviate stress and anxiety. Let’s encourage one another to stay active and support our wellness journeys together!
As we move into this new month, let’s embrace the opportunities for growth and connection that lie ahead. Remember, we’re all in this together, and taking care of ourselves is key to taking care of our students. Wishing you a fulfilling and wellness-focused month!
Innovation Coaches' Corner
I'm pleased to share some valuable resources from the Rupertsland Institute, who recently presented at our Indigenous Learning Leads meeting. Their team provides outstanding, cost-free professional development opportunities, along with exceptional resources and lesson plans that can be readily implemented in our classrooms.
One highlight is their collection of storytelling art posters, which offer a wonderful way to incorporate Indigenous content into language arts. Aligned with Lana’s literacy structure, these posters make excellent prompts for students' weekly quick writes, sparking engagement and creativity.
