A MESSAGE FROM JEN ROTH
Dear CCS Caregivers and Charlotte Community,
I have had the pleasure of serving CCS for over eight years as a co-principal and school leader. In that time, I have witnessed a true generosity that is core in this community. Thank you for supporting me in this role and the educators who are committed to each child in our care. My wish for you is to use the coming days to connect with family and friends. I hope in the new year, we can all carry the spirit of patience and presence.
Happy Holidays and Warm Wishes for 2025.
Warm regards,
Jen

This event is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, January 9, 2025 with performances and exhibits taking place from 5PM-9PM.
If your child is a member of chorus, the schedule is as follows:
5:45 - meet in the CVU chorus room (room 160) for a rehearsal with eighth graders across the district
6:30 - performance of the CVSD eighth grade choir in the CVU auditorium
Dress is casual for arts night and we hope that in addition to your child's performance that your family is able to walk the halls at CVU to see the learning that is being showcased. If there are any questions about the chorus performance, please contact Mr. Gribnau at cgribnau@cvsdvt.org.
FIRST LEGO LEAGUE
Last Saturday the CCS Lego Hawks competed in the FIRST LEGO League Northern Qualifier at Shelburne Community School. With a strong showing of 220 points in the robot game, a well-executed Innovation Project, and a Robot Presentation, the Lego Hawks secured their spot in the Vermont State Finals on January 18 for a second straight year!
COSTCO SLEDS NEEDED FOR WINTER FUN AT CCS
For the last few winters, we’ve started out the sledding season with about twenty sleds for classes to sign out of for students to use during recess on the back hill. As you can imagine, with hundreds of students using these sleds weekly, they need annual replacements. If you are interested in contributing to our closet of sleds, we would welcome very specific donations that can be found at Costco. These foam-based sleds with a polished plastic base have held up longer than any other sled we have purchased in the last eight years. They cost between $15-18 a piece. It was reported they are on sale now. Thank you in advance to anyone able to help!
TAKING CARE OF OURSELVES AND OTHERS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
This time of year can be challenging for all of us. If you are feeling overwhelmed there are a lot of great things you can do to bring yourself to the present and connect with your loved ones in a way that feels supportive and meaningful. Have you ever felt frantic, like there is too much to do and not enough time? It is ok to take a pause. Practice some mindful breathing, take a walk or use any tool that helps you to bring yourself back to a calm, rational place. We can help our kids by modeling what it means to take care of ourselves!
If things are feeling heavy or you need support to get through a tough moment, there are people to help. You can call First Call for Chittenden County at 488-7777 and they will provide you support to get through the tough moments. FREE SUPPORT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS, 24/7- Crisis Text Line serves anyone, in any type of crisis, providing access to free, 24/7 support and information via the medium people already use and trust: text.
1. Text "VT" to 741741 from anywhere in the USA, anytime, about any type of crisis.
2. A live, trained Crisis Counselor receives the text and responds quickly.
3. The volunteer Crisis Counselor will help you move from a hot moment to a cool moment.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN LOTTERY IS NOW OPEN FOR 2025-2026!
The CVSD Early Education Program is now accepting applications for a random prekindergarten lottery drawing for the 2025-26 school year. This lottery is for an opportunity to enroll in one of our school-based classrooms which runs 4 partial days per week. Our school-based prekindergarten classrooms are 5 STARs, licensed early education programs that provide play-based, developmentally appropriate environments for all children in an inclusive setting. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS).
Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar. Children who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2025, who are not eligible for kindergarten, and live in the communities of Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George, and Williston are eligible to enter the lottery. Families who are selected for the lottery and choose to enroll their child in a CVSD program access their Act 166 publicly funded prekindergarten funds for the school-based program.
All applications must be received by February 7, 2025, and are located on the CVSD Early Education website under PreK Enrollment. Paper applications are available upon request.
For additional information, questions about our program, or any concerns about your child’s development, please visit our website or contact Director of Early Education, Erin Gagne at egagne@cvsdvt.org. Our Early Education team is also available for developmental screenings in the areas of communication, social-emotional development, motor skills, adaptive development, and cognition. More information about an Early Multi-Tiered System of Supports is also available on the website.

HOLIDAY NOTE: CONNECTING YOUTH CONNECTS CAREGIVERS
If next week is a time for gathering, celebrating, and family connectedness, we wish you joy and happiness. Those moments are precious. If this time of year brings up challenging emotions - stress, loneliness, or missing loved ones - please be kind to yourself.
For those whose celebrations involve alcohol, be mindful of the young people who are present and watching. The way adults model responsible drinking behaviors significantly influences the risk perceptions and actions of young individuals. We recognize that not all aspects of holiday celebrations involving alcohol are within our control. However, many situations are preventable, particularly concerning underage [binge] drinking and impaired driving.
For a little more on the topic, check out this take from Jessica Lahey, a renowned NYT bestselling author, parent educator, and prevention coach.
This time of year is also a prime opportunity to have a conversation about alcohol and substances with your kids. Just try starting from a restorative place about their safety and genuine concern rather than a restrictive "don’t get caught" mindset. We know that when we have open, honest and curious conversations about substances, our words can have a more significant impact on their choices and behaviors.
For more prevention resources, check out our library for parents and caregivers here.
Have a wonderful break!
NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO THIS HOLIDAY SEASON? THE 988 LIFELINE IS AVAILABLE 24/7
The holiday season can be joyful and stressful. For youth, the holiday break can bring unstructured and unsupervised time away from trusted connections, leading to risky behaviors or feelings of isolation and loneliness. Remember the free, confidential 988 Lifeline is available 24/7 to provide support and local services - you don't need to be in crisis to call. Whether it’s struggling with tough emotions, substance use, or just needing someone to talk to, no crisis is too small. Read more at cvsdvt.org/988-lifeline
BE GUN SAFE DURING THE EARLY WINTER BREAK
Whether you’re spending time at home or traveling to visit family, secure any firearms in your home and ask how guns are stored in homes you’re visiting. Unintentional shootings are far more likely to occur when children and teens are home from school, including on holiday breaks. Need help securing your firearm? Free cable gun locks are available throughout the community, including at the front desks of schools.
JANUARY IS MENTOR APPRECIATION MONTH
Did you know Connecting Youth Mentoring is one of the largest programs in Vermont? We serve more than160 5th-12th grade mentees. And 80% of our them agree or strongly agree that their mentor makes them feel like they matter. That’s impact!
January is Mentor Appreciation Month, and we want to acknowledge the positive impact our mentors have on our young people across CVSD. Our mentors are a special group of folks; their generosity is invaluable. One hour a week, they connect with their mentees, nurturing relationships, building trust and instilling life-long skills.
Thank you, CY Mentors for your dedication to our young people and our community. Your time, guidance, and support make a difference everyday. We are so grateful for all that you do. To learn more about mentoring and Connecting Youth, visit our site.
We welcome your feedback at any time. Please select your topic below and send your thoughts our way. If you don't see your topic listed, choose "General Questions." All feedback will be routed to the appropriate district team members, who will follow up with you within 3 business days. CVSD is committed to connecting with students, families, staff, and community members to provide exceptional and equitable experiences.
HOUSEHOLD INFORMATION FORM FOR FREE AND REDUCED MEALS
Even though free and reduced meal applications are no longer required for free meals, the Vermont Agency of Education asks that all families complete the Household Information Form. Thank you.
