PLTW Showcase
On Thursday, the High School hosted its first Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Showcase, providing a platform for other school districts and local businesses to explore the innovative work our students are doing in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This event offered attendees a firsthand look at the cutting-edge projects and research our students have been developing through PLTW courses.
The day began with an introduction led by Ms. Carrie Jones, WYAHS Principal, and Ms. Melissa Appnel, Director of K-12 Curriculum and Assessment, who provided an overview of the PLTW course implementation. Guests then observed Ms. Kirsty Houck's Human Body Systems class, where students identified the parts of a sheep brain and conducted a dissection activity. Following this, visitors had the chance to engage with student representatives from each PLTW course at a Showcase held in the Auxiliary Gym. The students shared their experiences in the courses and demonstrated key projects.
After enjoying a delicious lunch prepared and served by Ms. Katie Stoops' Cooking and Catering students, attendees visited Mr. Christopher Storm's Computer Science class, where students were coding various apps.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the PLTW Showcase a success! Special recognition goes to the students who demonstrated key components of our three pathways: Gateway Programs at the Middle School and the Biomedical and Computer Science Pathways at the High School.

On Tuesday, October 15, Ms. Nicki Stiger's Creative Writing class at the High School, along with Ms. Melissa Carl and Ms. Caroline Pritts, visited the Under Construction Exhibit at Creative York on Beaver Street. After a tour of the exhibits and a mini art lesson, students wrote their interpretation of the artwork for The Writer's Eye Literary Competition to be judged later this year.

More From STEELS Science Standards
Last week, we shared with you the professional development and piloting of new science activities in preparation for the new STEELS standards that will be implemented next year. If you missed that issue, you can check it out here. Here are a few more new activities!
Ms. Heather Kopp's second grade students at Lincolnway Elementary explored two questions, "Why is there sand at the beach?" and "Where do flash floods happen?"
For the first question, students investigated the effects of rocks tumbling in a river. Based on their observations, they constructed an explanation for why there is sand at a beach. In the activity, Rocking the River, students pretended to be a river and tore up pieces of construction paper to model what happens to rocks as they travel along the river.
Ms. Kopp's students also explored the phenomenon of flash floods and created an explanation of why these severe weather events are more or less likely in different regions. They specifically attempted to locate and explain a unique region in Texas known as Flash Flood Alley. In the activity, Find Flash Flood Alley, students developed a map to document how land and water interact across the state. Students then used that map to explain how different shapes and kinds of land increase or decrease the chances of rainfall causing a flash flood.
Unity Day!
October 16 was Unity Day. Ms. Vanessa Bicher, School Counselor at Lincolnway Elementary, organized an activity with the help of Ms. Jess Schuhart, Assistant Principal. Students were posed with the following question at recess, “What would you need to HEAR if you were having a bad day?” Students were given the opportunity to write their ideas on a Post-It Note to add to the bulletin board! The students did a great job participating in sharing so many options! Check out some of their notes - "You are kind!" "Do your best!" "How are you feeling?" "Do you want to be my friend?" "I need a hug." "Be your best Bulldog self." "I'm here for you!" "Do you want to play with me?" "You are the best!!"
Special Guest Helps Students Connect with History
Long-time West York resident and Vietnam War veteran Mr. Bill Moncuse recently paid a special visit to Mr. Daniel Quickel's Social Studies students at the High School. The students were eager to hear firsthand accounts from someone who had experienced such a pivotal and complex time in American history. Mr. Moncuse shared not only his personal stories about being drafted into the military but also his experiences serving in Vietnam.
During his visit, Mr. Moncuse discussed the reality of war, painting a picture of what life was like in the military and the daily challenges soldiers faced. He talked about the draft system and how young men, like himself, were called to serve, often leaving behind their families and putting their future plans on hold. His heartfelt stories offered students a personal perspective that went beyond the pages of their textbooks, allowing them to connect with history in a meaningful way.
Mr. Moncuse's visit was a powerful reminder of the importance of honoring veterans and preserving their stories for future generations. The West York community is grateful for his service, and the students were fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from him directly. Thank you for your service, Bill!

Westward Exploration: Students Simulate 'Going West' with Oregon Trail
Ms. Emma Geiger's READ 180 class at Trimmer Elementary read texts on the topic of "Going West" over the past couple of weeks. So far, they read an informational article and an excerpt of a memoir in class. They found evidence for some of the difficulties and disadvantages to traveling out west, but also some of the positives for why people would make such a difficult journey. Students are beginning to form their own opinions about whether or not they would choose to go west in order to work on a writing piece later on in the unit. This week, students got to simulate going west by playing the game "Oregon Trail" on the computer. Students were excited and engaged to face some of the challenges and dangers first hand in the computer game!
Snapshots of Change: Students Reflect on Growth Through the Seasons
Some of Ms. Shanda Goodwin's Gems at Wallace Elementary have been talking about change in their own lives and in the four seasons. The kids were invited to bring in pictures of themselves when they were younger. They talked about how they were the same and how they have changed over time. The kids enjoyed seeing how much they changed!
Hands-On Conservation: Students Aid in Ecosystem Management at Wizard Ranch
On Saturday, October 12th, the West York Area High School Envirothon Team, led by Mr. Jason Lyons, went to Wizard Ranch to assist in the Lancaster Conservancy with their habitat restoration project. The team helped to remove a large area of locust so that new growth could take place. The team also learned a little about ecosystem management and the importance of natives and biodiversity in wild habitats and how even if there are all natives, sometimes they need to be cleared to promote a more stable and diverse area. They learned how to identify a few different invasive species such as multiflora rose and oriental bittersweet.
Team members who participated: Kaitlynn Walizer, Adailez Garcia, Ryleigh Lunger, Anthony Rodriguez, Athena Richard, Chance Seems, and Paige Shenberger.
Trimmer's AWESOME News Crew
Trimmer Elementary's Student News Crew, led by Ms. Courtney Henry, is an engaging way to start each new day at Trimmer. Student reporters deliver the weather, daily lunch menu, important announcements, and our Birthday Elf, Frosting, celebrates Trimmer birthdays each day. Reminders about band, chorus, and K'nex Club are also announced each day. On Fridays, Ms. Melissa Halcott, Trimmer's Assistant Principal, announces bus, van, and car rider biscuit winners and special spirit days are celebrated too. Trimmer's Student News Crew does an amazing job communicating all the wonderful things happening at Trimmer. Next week is Red Ribbon Week and they are kicking off their National Make a Difference Day supply drive for the West York Bulldog Pantry, so they are going to have a lot to announce and celebrate each morning!

The team raised $520.00 for Pink Power of York through donations, t-shirt sales, and concession stand profits. While most people think of women when they hear about breast cancer, it also impacts men. Men should know their family history and talk with their primary care physician regarding other risk factors.

Help Us Create a Field of Flags for Veterans Day!
On Monday, November 11th, we will recognize the veterans in our local community. We plan to do this through a Field of Flags fundraising campaign at both the Middle School and the High School. The funds raised will benefit the Disabled American Veterans Organization (DAV).
The campaign coordinators for the High School fundraiser are Ms. Emily Corcoran and Ms. Yvette Ganoe. At the Middle School, Mr. Andrew Johnson and Mr. James Snelbaker are coordinating their fundraiser.
DAV provides a lifetime of support for veterans of all generations and their families, in positive, life-changing ways. DAV ensures veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits they deserve and receive care and support during tough times. DAV also advocates for the veteran community on Capitol Hill, connects veterans with meaningful employment, and so much more.
These are two separate fundraising campaigns, so you may donate to one or both campaigns as you see fit. As we raise money, DAV will send flags to each school to be displayed outside on the lawns. The fundraising campaign ends on October 28th, so do not delay!
Look for our flags starting November 8th in front of the Middle and High Schools.
Donations are online only.
Click HERE to donate to the Middle School Campaign.
Click HERE to donate to the High School Campaign.
Again, all funds donated go directly to the DAV organization to help our nation’s veterans.

Important Information from our School Nurses
Does your child have signs or symptoms of the flu, Covid or RSV? Did they test positive?
The recommendations are that your child stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without medication and that they feel good enough to return to school. The CDC also recommends (it is optional) that a mask be worn for 5 days after their return if they tested positive for Covid.
Students who have been exposed to someone who tested positive for Covid do not need to stay home from school unless they come down with symptoms or test positive.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your school nurse.
Student Absence Excuse Form
As a friendly reminder, when your child is absent from school, parents/guardians must complete an Absence Excuse Blank, either a paper copy or by using the online Digital Excuse Blank through the Sapphire Parent Portal. An Absence Excuse Blank must be received within three days of a students return to school following an absence, known as the 3-day rule.
The 3-day rule states "No excuse blanks will be accepted after the third day of the date of return from the absence. The absence will be recorded as unexcused for students 18 years or older. Students under the age of 18 are recorded as unlawful.”
While a paper Absence Excuse Blank can be sent in, they can also be forgotten or lost in transit. Don't Miss Out on the Many Scholarships Available!
Our West York Area High School's Counseling Center compiles lists of available scholarships as our high school students prepare for their post-secondary educational plans and funding.
An updated list will be posted at the High School as new scholarships become available. Each time the bulletin is revised, it is printed on a different color of paper from the previous bulletin, making it easy to tell when new information has been added.
PLEASE NOTE: The date due is very important. Please have applications submitted to the Counseling Center at least 6 days prior to due date. This allows the Counseling Center staff sufficient time for review of the application and transcript preparation, ensuring that the application is sent out in a timely manner.
All hard copies of scholarship applications are located inside the Counseling Center in the waiting area in the drawer marked SCHOLARSHIPS. The Counseling Center also emails each scholarship and updated bulletin directly to students' school emails.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Gail Wildasin in the Counseling Center.
