We had another good week in first grade! We want to thank Sebastian’s mom for being our mystery reader yesterday. She read The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. I had never heard of this book before, but after hearing it yesterday, I ordered a copy on Amazon to read to my fifteen year old twins!
We want to thank you for all of the cards, gifts, and sweets we received today. Thank you for making our Valentine’s Day special. The students also enjoyed exchanging valentines this afternoon. After the February break, we will send home valentines to any student who was unable to attend school today or had to leave early.
Please keep practicing rainbow words and math facts with your child. Also continue to read with your child every night.
We hope you enjoy your week off!

This week:
Math- Unit 3 continues. We analyzed methods for adding within 20, used addition methods flexibly to find sums based on the numbers in a given problem, and played games that reinforced adding two and three numbers within twenty. Students also wrote equations with three addends.
Reading/Phonics- We learned that readers don’t give up. When a word is extra challenging, we take a step back, take a deep breath, and look again. We reread the sentence and take a closer look at the tricky word to solve it. In phonics we practiced rhyme recognition, onset fluency, blending phonemes, isolating medial sounds, segmenting phonemes, adding initial phonemes, deleting initial phonemes, and substituting phonemes.
Writing- we continued writing topic books.
Social Studies- Our historic figures study continues: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacagawea (exploration), Theodore Roosevelt (National Parks and the environment), George Washington Carver, and Ruby Bridges.
Next week:
Math- We will use subtraction methods flexibly to find differences based on the numbers in a given problem. We will also play games to practice addition and subtraction within 20.
Reading/Phonics- We will look at how to read longer words. We will look at words with double consonants and learn to break them in half between those consonants, read each part, and then put the parts together. We will also review floss words, silent e words, vowel teams ee and ea.
Writing- We will continue writing topic books on a subject of interest. We are using graphic organizers to help us prewrite.
Social Studies- Our historic figures study continues: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacagawea (exploration), Theodore Roosevelt (National Parks and the environment), George Washington Carver, and Ruby Bridges.

Dear Parents,
The students were excited to exchange their Valentine’s cards with one another. Thank you for the thoughtful treats you sent for the teachers; they were greatly appreciated. Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable winter break.
This week:
Reading: The students listened to, read, and answered questions about books in Raz-kids.

"My favorite part of the story was __________ because __________."

Science: We started the Light unit.
Next week:
Reading: The students will practice decoding CVCV words.
Writing: The students will write CVCV words during dictation.
Language: The students will compare animals, identifying how they are similar and how they are different, while also practicing vocabulary and answering and asking questions.
