The Lions' Pride
Lincoln Elementary: One School, One Family
Dear Lincoln Families,
We had a wonderful first full week of school and it was exciting to welcome all of our Kindergarten students into the building. We have spent some time the first week teaching and reinforcing our school procedures and expectations. At Lincoln we call this; PAWS. PAWS means: Be Positive, Act Responsibly, Work Hard, and Show Respect in all areas of the school. Students have a chance to earn Lion Bucks by showing PAWS. Please talk with your child about PAWS and if their class has earned a Lion Buck yet.
Thank you for all of your support!
Beginning of the Year Assessments - Acadience, MAP Testing and TGRG
Each Fall we have several assessment that our students take so we can learn more about their strengths and areas of growth. Kindergarten and first grade students will take the Acadience assessment in literacy and our students in grades 2-5 will take the MAP Assessment in reading and math.
The MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessment measures student achievement and academic growth over time. It also compares student, class and grade level performance with other students’ performance across the country. The results are one data point that will help to provide a more complete picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn, helping staff better plan instruction to meet their needs.
All students in grade K-3 will take assessments for the the 3rd Grade Reading Guarantee. Ohio’s law for the Third Grade Reading Guarantee puts a greater emphasis on reading instruction and intervention in the early grades
Volunteers Needed
Our librarian, Mrs. Schafhausen is looking for volunteers to help with books. Please email her at schafhausenk@gjps.org if you have some time to help out.

Meet Our School Counselors!
Dear Lincoln Elementary Families,
As we embark on another exciting school year, we are thrilled to announce we will have two full-time school counselors, Mr. Rediger and Mrs. Hayhurst! We are here to support our students' social, emotional, and academic growth throughout the year.
Mr. Rediger works with our learners in grades K, 2, and 4. He can be reached at redigern@gjps.org or (614) 643-0817.
Mrs. Hayhurst serves our students in grades 1, 3, and 5. She can be reached at hayhurstj@gjps.org or (614) 643-0793.
Together, we are focused on creating a safe space for our students to explore their feelings, build friendships, and navigate their educational journey. Throughout the year, we will be updating you on what we are teaching in our monthly lessons and the groups we will be offering.
New Reading/Writing and Math Curriculum
We are excited to be implementing new Math (Bridges) and Reading/Writing (Wit and Wisdom) Curriculum throughout the district this year in all K-5 classrooms. We will be starting on Monday, Aug 19th with the new curriculum tools.
There will be some changes for our procedures and routines for these new curriculum tools, and we will ease into this with our students.
Below are resources for families for both math (Bridges) and reading/writing (Wit and Wisdom) if you are interested in learning more:
Attendance
Pursuant to House Bill 410, student attendance is now calculated in hours. This includes absences that have been identified as both excused and unexcused by the school, as well as planned absences. Being late or tardy to school does calculate into the total hours absent.
PLANNED ABSENCES (Such as vacation):
The time missed will be counted as an authorized, UNEXCUSED absence but shall not be a factor in determining grades unless the make-up work is not completed. Students who are absent 38 hours in a month or 65 hours in a school year with or without legitimate excuse are now considered Excessively Absent. These students will receive a letter from the District and will be required to follow the District Truancy Plan. These hours include approved planned absences. Planned absences will not be approved if your child has already met or will meet (based on this request) the absence threshold for Excessive Absence and/or Habitual Truancy.
If you have a planned absence, please fill out this form and send it in to the office. For more information or questions, please visit the GJPS website.
