Wildcat Newsletter
October 23rd, 2024
Dear Woodlawn Families,
We are excited to welcome Ms. Then and her new class to the north pod. You may have noticed the added first grade flag at the entrance to the north playground. With more space and more time for each student, the first grade team hasn’t skipped a beat in instruction and are thankful for the opportunity for the smaller class size.
This week’s Early Release will have more students staying after school lets out at 11:50. Campfire continues to provide extended care and SUN School has opened spaces, too. The Woodlawn staff will be continuing their professional development together covering: curriculum unpacking and planning, learning about and honing skills in de-escalation strategies, and practicing activities from the new SEL curriculum, Wayfinder.
We have many students biking to school, which is great to see. It’s a good idea to have a plan for the bicycle after school. We have learned the hard way that leaving the bike overnight, even locked to a bike rack, is not a good idea. If you must leave a bike, please coordinate with the office so we can find a spot inside the building overnight.
As I mentioned last week, the weather is changing and we hold recess even in the rain. Please send your child to school with a coat. If your child needs a coat for the season, please let us know and we can help. Also, write your child's name somewhere on the clothing. If your child is missing a jacket or coat please have them check the lost and found…we have many items in the mai hallway. You are welcome to stop in at entry and dismissal to take a look yourself.
Run 4 Woodlawn Fundraising $ Due by Friday to Qualify for Larger Prizes AND T Shirts!
All money raised for Run 4 Woodlawn is due THIS Friday. Please turn in an envelope with your pledges even if all the money was collected electronically via Pledgestar. This helps us with tracking and managing prize distribution. And, if your child raised $20 or more they will get a RUn for Woodlawn tshirt and we need to know their size; there’s a spot on the envelope to mark this information. Prizes will be given out mid November! Thanks for another great year of Run 4 Woodlawn and for supporting our community.
For 5th grade families:
The upcoming 2024-25 MS transfer cycle is opening November 13th. Lottery applications close December 17th. Forms and additional resources are available on the PPS Lottery and Transfer Information Website, or email enrollment-office@pps.net
Attendance Parties This Week!
Congrats to all three of our 3rd grade classes for meeting their attendance goals and earning parties last Friday! We will be celebrating Mr. Ransom’s 4th grade class for great attendance this upcoming Friday as well. YAY Mrs. Howard, Ms. Rice, Mr. Ransom, and Ms. Escovedo!
4th Grade Salmon
As many of you know, part of our 4th grade curriculum is a study of the lifecycle of salmon. In previous years our 4th grade has taken a field trip in the spring to the Little White Salmon Hatchery but there have been no salmon in that season. Thanks to Mr. Ransom, we were able to coordinate the trip earlier this year so our students could see the salmon in the flesh!

A note from our OSU Nutrition Educator, Rebecca Marson
Hello, Wildcats!
Thank you to everyone who participated in our apple tasting last Thursday. Students had the chance to try a Pink Pearl and a Blondee, both from Kiyokawa Family Orchards. The Pink Pearl has a lovely pink flesh with a crisp, tart flavor, while the Blondee is sweet and juicy. A total of 213 students tasted and voted on their favorite! It was a close race, but in the end, the Blondee came out on top with 107 votes, just one ahead of the Pink Pearl, which had 106 votes! Both apples were a hit, and we loved the enthusiasm. Thanks again to everyone who joined in the fun, and we look forward to more tastings in the future!
