A FEW REMINDERS:
A Note From Our Social Worker - Mrs. Handrick
The IC Student Council is hosting a winter clothing drive for our K-5 students! This year, we are specifically looking for snow pants, boots, hats, and waterproof gloves/mittens. Items should be new or gently used and will be collected in bins near the ELC, PC and IC offices from October 14th through November 1st.
Donations will be used for the following purposes:
- Given to students who need items to enjoy recess
- Used to stock our school borrow bins
- Donated to Neighbors Helping Neighbors Community Clothes Closet
If you are in need of winter clothing for your student, please contact your building's school social worker:
- ELC/PC: Sophie Langkamp (608-437-7567, langkampsophia@mounthorebschools.org)

ART
Hello Art Families,
Hopefully by now, you've seen paperwork from Original Works, a company that specializes in putting a piece of artwork on a variety of items. Students are creating their work now and have a variety of options. Orders will be pushed back one week. Meaning you have until Nobember 11 to place an order. Marketability has been discussed, but please do not feel obligated to purchase. Items purchased will be shipped to school and sent home with students before the winter break commences.
How do you know what the art looks like and where is the magnet are questions I've been asked by seasoned parents. It's my first time doing this fundraiser, so I am learning as I go. This year there will be no magnet sent home, this is not the version of the program you have seen previously I am told. I will take photos and post the work on Artsonia to maintain a portfolio for students, you can view the work there or ask your child for information. Thanks for your patience and as always, please do not feel obligated to purchase.
Artsonia will soon notify you of finished projects! In 3rd Grade Art, we are finishing up our Chameleons and they are so cute! They are watercolored, googly eyed, bedazzled creatures. Some look like dragons with wings, some have sharp teeth, while still others are eating pom poms, or have feathery tails. I can't wait for you to see them in person and the students are so excited to take them home! These are displayed in the library (thanks Mrs. Brauns!) and you'll see no two creatures are the same! In 4th Grade Art, we are finishing Radial Paper Sculptures. Students are focused on careful folds, spatial awareness and planning, and symmetrical designs. These have high impact in the hallways and can be viewed near the 4th grade classrooms. The variety is incredible! 5th Grade Art finds us finishing our Agamographs. These projects are truly incredible to see and many staff and students have been amazed viewing them in the hallway. Unfortunately, the photos I've taken do not do the work justice, so please make sure when you are in for Conferences you check them out. They will be featured near the gym and cafeteria.
Each grade level will next be participating in the Original Works fundraiser, after that we'll be back to regularly scheduled programming. Your students are amazing and I am ever grateful for your support! Please ask your students about these skills and projects--I hope you'll be as impressed as I am. Many students have asked about when they can take artwork home, it's my hope to give them their projects safely at semester's end.
Thank you!

GUIDANCE
Counselor’s Corner:
Check out the school counselor webpage and review our lesson topics for this semester. This month we are exploring what it means to show compassion and accept the differences within our school and community. One of the resources our school uses is from the website welcomingschools.org. Lessons/resources encourage students to be respectful to the diverse world around them such as skin color, culture, family structure, etc.
To reach my webpage,
- go to https://www.mounthorebschools.org/schools/intermediate,
- click on the families section, and
- look under the Student Services column and

LIBRARY
Our fall Scholastic Book Fair will be coming soon to the IC. We hope you can visit the library and the fair during parent/teacher conferences on Tuesday, November 12 and Thursday, November 14.
Third grade students are still working on our FICtion unit and continuing to develop their independence when using the library to find books that are not only good fit books, but also books that interest them.
Fourth grade students are still working on our Dewey Decimal Unit. We’ve been incorporating a little math with some sorts and ordering of decimals. They will use this skill to independently find nonfiction books that interest them.
Fifth grade wrapped up the first quarter with learning to use the Google Citation Tool for a research project they will be working on in their classrooms.
During the second quarter, 5th graders will be attending health class instead of their weekly library lesson. They will still get to come to the library each week to check out books.
Are you interested in volunteering at our library?

MUSIC
Renowned percussionist, Evelyn Glennie, is our November Musician of the Month. An award winning percussionist, her stated lifelong mission is to ‘Teach the World to Listen.’ As the month goes on, ask your student what they remember about Evelyn Glennie and our other musicians of the month so far (Black Violin and Pura Fé) and listen along with us here. Of course, this is only a small part of what goes on in the music room! One favorite activity of our 3rd and 4th graders has been the exploration of small percussion - hand drums, rhythm sticks, shakers, and xylophones.
5th grade is hard at work on our performance of Joust, a musical retelling of the story of King Arthur and the Round Table! Our students sound fantastic and are excited to share their work with you. Here are the details you need about the performance:
Who: All 5th grade students
When: Friday November 22 at 2pm in the High School Auditorium -- please join us!
Parking: Please watch for more information
Clothing: All students should wear a white OR black shirt and black/dark pants.
Please encourage your student to work on memorization. This YouTube channel has all the musical tracks and lyrics. (Fair warning - the songs are catchy!)
The 5th grade orchestra will be playing before “Joust” begins. They will be performing a song called “Medieval Kings” which they have been working on all for the last couple of months. Orchestra students will need to have their music and instruments at school on Thursday November 21st so that they can transport them to the high school Friday morning. The orchestra students are encouraged to wear their orchestra t-shirts for this performance.
Conference times are available during conference nights by request. Please contact us if you would like to meet.

READING
It's November already!? The beginning of the year always seems to fly by once we get into a good routine! In November, we welcome families to join us for Parent Teacher Conferences. At conferences, we will have our scholastic book fair in the library. It's a perfect time to look at some new books with your child and spark their at home reading joy! Conferences are also a great time to talk with your child's teacher about their reading growth and how to support them at home. Our monthly newsletter is linked below.

MATH
Happy November! The school year is now in full swing and learners have started Unit 2 in math class. To support your child’s math learning at home, it would be beneficial to practice basic math facts with your child. Understanding and knowing facts allows students to be flexible thinkers when solving more complex problems.
Below are some game ideas for you and your family. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you are looking for math ideas at home.
