This site is a hub for summer opportunities that are run by our division, the City of Charlottesville, or program partners in our schools. These offerings are either free, financially accessible, or offer scholarships. While it is not meant to be a full list of everything happening in Charlottesville this summer, we hope that this site provides you with an array of options that suit your children and the needs of your family.
We will continue to update this page with the most recent information, so check back or “follow” this newsletter (by clicking the orange "Follow" button) to see more opportunities in the coming weeks.

Explore Engineering (July 15-19, 2024) - Middle School Students
Explore Engineering is a five-day summer enrichment program for middle school students from Charlottesville and Albemarle County public schools; it is focused on STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
This program is sponsored by the Public Education Foundation of Charlottesville/Albemarle, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion at UVA's School of Engineering and Applied Science, and local industries.
The camp will be held in Rice Hall at the University of Virginia from July 15 - 19, 2024. We meet each day from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with a break for lunch at UVA’s O-Hill dining facility.
Each morning, student teams will work on team-based engineering activities. In past years, they have included Special Delivery (transporting a ping pong ball to a remote location using a limited set of materials), Harness the Wind (generating electricity with wind power), designing and building a model Hovercraft, Trash Sliders (building a vehicle from trash that could transverse an obstacle course without spilling its load), Ra Power (designing and building a solar car to pull weighed cart), and Building Bridges using K’Nex parts.
Afternoons are devoted to individual art activities conceived and directed by a local artist. Last year, these included building UFO's, making plaster fossils using sand casting, constructing and painting paper kites, and making masks using vacuform technology.
Each year the activities may be different, but will engage and excite the students.

Blazing a Trail: Community Partners Launch Green Careers Initiative for Charlottesville Youth
In a (literally) groundbreaking collaboration, the City of Charlottesville, through their Community Attention Youth Internship Program (CAYIP), is joining forces with the Shenandoah National Park Trust (SNPT), Rivanna Trail Foundation (RTF), Appalachian Conservation Corps (ACC), and Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club (CAMBC) to pilot Trailblazers: Charlottesville to Shenandoah, a program designed to cultivate and empower urban youth to see themselves in “green” jobs.
Trailblazers arose from a community need to reverse the growing disconnect between America’s youth and the natural world, introduce new audiences to the outdoors, and build a skilled workforce committed to preserving local natural spaces.
In Charlottesville, that natural world is rarely more than a few blocks away. The Rivanna Trail encircles most of the city, providing both access to nature and alternative transportation for residents and visitors. Yet only a very small percentage of those residents and visitors make use of the wooded path.
This summer, individuals aged 16-18 in Charlottesville can become Trailblazers to engage with the outdoors while learning conservation and trail maintenance skills and actively contributing to their community. Participants will spend five weeks working on the Rivanna Trail and other local trail systems while enjoying recreational opportunities in their city. The program will culminate with an intensive three-day trail work experience in Shenandoah National Park, giving participants an opportunity to meet and work alongside National Park Service employees.
“This program is critical because it creates a first step for youth to both develop themselves and give back to the community.” said ACC Corps Director Zach Foster. “With a $15 per hour wage, free training and equipment, and easy transportation, this program opens a door toward new opportunities for their future educational and work pathways."
Ultimately, the goal of Trailblazers is to empower the next generation of outdoor leaders and champions for public lands, both in their hometown and beyond.
Bobby Casteen, a CAMBC board member, said, “The Trailblazers Initiative is important because it promotes collaboration between community organizations to create change, and it can influence youth in our community to see the value in community engagement and service.”
Applications are now open through CAYIP, and the seven-week program is scheduled to run from June 24th to August 4th, 2024. This opportunity is open to all youth, regardless of skills, experience, or background. The application window will close on May 1st.
Trailblazers: Charlottesville to Shenandoah is funded by the program partners, with support from Public Lands. Please contact Ethan Serr at eserr@snptrust.org if you or your business or organization would like to support this collaboration.

Charlottesville Fire Department Third Annual Girls Fire & EMS Camp
CFD's Girls Fire & EMS Camp has a new name: “Camp Inspire.” This camp aims to empower and inspire young women to pursue a career in the fire service. The three-day camp will take place on Wednesday, June 26th to Friday, June 28th, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is free and open to City of Charlottesville students, rising grades 7-12.
The camp has been part of the CFD's effort to bolster diversity throughout the department. According to the National Fire Protection Agency, out of the estimated 1,041,200 firefighters worldwide, women only make up 9 percent of that total.
In 2020, CFD only had 3 female Firefighter/EMTs in the department. CFD now has 12 female firefighter/EMTs. During the three-day camp, young women will learn CPR, tour a hospital and dispatch center, participate in Fire/EMS simulations, and participate in team-building exercises. The camp will provide mentorship, instill confidence, and strengthen leadership skills.
Registration is open and will close on May 31st.
To register for the camp, please visit www.charlottesville.gov/fire.
