What's Happening at Western?
9/20/2024
Dear Western families,
It was nice seeing so many 6th grade parents at our Open House this week. We hope you felt the passion our staff has for this age group and left with the feeling that your children are in very capable hands at Western. We are here to partner with you as you and your children navigate the next three years.
This week, my husband went against the advice I included in my last SMORE about it being okay for your child to get natural consequences when they forget something at home. On Tuesday, he shared that he brought one of our daughters her Chromebook that she left at home even though the teacher emailed to remind the students they needed it to take a test. After I made sure no one knew he was my husband, especially anyone who may have read my SMORE, we discussed a plan for how we can be supportive of our children while also helping them become more responsible. We agreed that each of our daughters will get 2 chances to “phone home” this year if they forget something and need us to save them from any natural consequences. Once they use their 2 chances, then they are on their own and will be forced to choose wisely when making that call. I will let you know how our plan works and if we (I mean my husband) sticks to it.
I want to end by taking the time to praise all our parents who drop off a child in the morning. I have never seen our drop-off line move so well! I know we have not experienced a rainy morning yet this year (those can be tough), but I am confident our rainy day drop off won’t be as bad as last year!
Please keep reading, so you don’t miss anything important. It isn’t too long this week.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. We are off to visit UCONN with our oldest for a tour. I am still in denial that I have a child old enough to be on college tours and have been pestering her to finish her essay and the Common App. I hope any of you also experiencing this college application process are less stressed out than I am!
Sincerely,
Suzanne Coyne

School Tardies
Parents will be contacted when their child has reached this threshold to discuss strategies and provide support to help their child arrive at school on time. If a student’s on-time attendance does not improve after these steps have been taken, additional interventions will be put in place, which may include after school detentions, a parent/guardian meeting with the school-based team, or involvement with one of the school’s mental health providers. Some parents have received emails this week to make them aware. As always, we are here to support you in any way needed.
Smarter Balanced Assessment Reports
Today, we mailed out the Smarter Balanced Assessment results from this past spring. A letter accompanies the report to provide a more detailed explanation and resources.
School Pictures
School picture day is Monday, September 30th. That will give your children the whole weekend to plan their outfit! Here is the information to order pictures:
Link to order: Western Middle photo prepay active until October 14th
Password: wms24
Our school prepay link is active until October 14th. This informational sheet has instructions. If there are multiple siblings at WMS, then you may enter the next child's name after placing the first child's package in the cart. Robert Taylor offers the 3rd child a free package for the same school. You put your first and second child's orders in the cart and when you add your third child it will be free. This special is only available until October 14th and if siblings are at the same school.
Open House Follow-Up
8th Grade Trip Update
It was great to see over 100 families at our first DC meeting of the year. Please read any emails you receive from Olivia Traina or Tyler Mecozzi, as they will be sharing materials that were reviewed at the meeting and sending important reminders over the next few months. The most important thing right now is for parents to register their child for the trip and, if needed, apply for financial assistance as soon as possible.
Western After School Clubs
After-School Club Catalog
Once again, here is the link to the After-School Club Catalog that describes the different activities held after school. Please look closely at the start date for each club, as some do not start for a few months.
Homework Hubs
I will keep including the Homework Hubs for each team and World Language to make sure you all bookmark this on your computer or phone (hint, hint). As always, please ask your child to show you their planner first before referring to the Homework Hubs.
