3rd Grade Narrative Writing Celebration!
Today we held a wonderful 3rd grade celebration to honor the hard work and creativity our students put into their writing. The culminating task of their writing unit, Crafting True Stories, was to craft personal true stories about special people, places, or moments in their lives. Through this task, they showcased their writing stamina and narrative proficiency. The unit's goal wasn't just to enhance the quality of their narratives but also to help them grow as independent writers, learning to navigate the writing process with confidence.
As part of the unit, students practiced progressing independently through the various stages of writing. They learned to monitor their growth by using checklists and rubrics, becoming active participants in their improvement. The revision and editing process allowed them to refine their stories further, gaining valuable experience in crafting polished, meaningful narratives. This growth reflects not just their increasing ability to write, but also their growing understanding of what it means to be a thoughtful and reflective writer.
The celebration was a joyful occasion filled with pride and excitement. Students eagerly shared their published pieces with one another. Rotating partners around the room, they demonstrated respect for each other's efforts and for the writing process itself. The atmosphere was vibrant, with students taking pride in their work and encourgaging each other, truly embodying the spirit of celebration and community!
Thank you to Ms. Grandinetti and Mr. Hohl for doing a stellar job in leading and guiding our students through the writing process of their own true story! Additionally, thank you to Ms. Barnett, Ms. Re, Ms. Verdugo, and Ms. Perez for your support.

Rocket Launching in 4S
What makes objects move the way they do?
Our 4th graders are immersed in a Science unit about force and motion that is guided by the essential question, "What makes objects move the way they do?" Today class 4S creatively used the hallway space to launch their rockets and measure the distance traveled by each one. Students positioned the rocket launcher, determine a desired angle and launched their rockets. They were able to make connections between angles and distance traveled.
See below some real time pictures of our 4th grade scientists. Thank you Ms. Smith!
Dibels - Beginning of Year Score Reports
DIBELS Score Reports - In Student Folders Today K-3
For families with children in grades K-3, grade 4 intervention (MTSS), and grades 4-6 with reading goals on their IEP, DIBELS Beginning of Year Home-Connect reports went home in student folders today. DIBELS is GPS’s universal reading screening assessment tool that measures early literacy skills aligned to the five pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The Home-Connect report reviews the skills your child was assessed on in September and makes suggestions on things you can do at home to support their continued progress as a reader. If you have questions about your child’s scores, please reach out to your child’s teacher or building administrators. For more information about DIBELS,

Book of the Month 📗
VIVA FRIDA by Yuyi Morales
In honor of the National Hispanic Heritage Month, Julian Curtiss students are celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America through literature, art and media creations.
Our school’s Book of the Month for October is Viva Frida by Yuyi Morales, an award-winning picture book illuminating different stages of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s life and how her experiences influenced her to become a world-renowned artist. Our students are not only immersing themselves into the bilingual (English-Spanish) words describing Frida’s inspirations, but also, peeking into the behind-the-scenes process of how Morales, a Mexican-American author & illustrator, brings magic into the illustrations.
Next week, we will look closer to the way animals- two monkeys, a parrot, three dogs, two turkeys, an eagle, a black cat and a fawn- played a role in influencing Frida through reading aloud Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos by acclaimed author Monica Brown and illustrator John Parra, best known for award-winning children’s picture books depicting his own Latino heritage.
In the next few weeks, our students will read Miró’s Magic Animals by Antony Penrose, a story highlighting Spanish surrealist painter and sculptor Joan Miró’s everyday farm objects and animals. They will have the opportunity to deep-dive into his paintings in Media classes and play “Roll a Miró Game” in Art classes, both experiences emphasizing the fundamental concepts of shape and color within the context of depicting animals. In Art, they will also revisit the role of animals in Frida Kahlo’s life.
As a wonderful culmination of our celebration, all Julian Curtiss students will create their own animal representations reflecting their heritage and ancestry in honor of United Nations Day on October 24. This meaningful project aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #15: Life on Land, encouraging our students to think about their connection to the world around them.
A huge thank you to Ms. Murray and Ms. Dietrick for their collaboration.
2nd Graders - CogAT Assessment
Greenwich will give all Grade 2 students the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) in October before ALP Enrichment placement. Because these abilities are closely related to an individual’s success in school in virtually all subjects, data gathered from the CogAT is included as one aspect of the multiple measures that help the staff make decisions regarding students’ instructional needs.
The assessment will be given between October 14 and November 1. Scores will be made available to parents on or before November 8. More information regarding the CoGAT Assessment is available at https://riversideinsights.com/cognitive_abilities_test.

🐶 Dog Policy at JC
Friendly Reminder:
For the safety and comfort of all our students, we kindly ask that families refrain from bringing dogs onto school grounds (including our blacktop/playground area). We love our furry friends, but keeping our grounds pet-free helps ensure a safe environment for everyone. Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation!
