Notes from Mrs. Heckenlaible...
Fall Back – Spring Ahead!
It doesn’t seem possible that we are already looking at “springing” our clocks ahead. Daylight Saving Time, March 12th, is fast approaching, so don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead an hour.
Thank you for attending parent/teacher conferences on February 2nd. We always look forward to meeting with each of you and sharing the learners’ highlights and academic successes. We had a great turnout, and it was so wonderful to be able to see so many of you!
All 3rd-5th grade learners will take part in the South Dakota Smarter Balance Testing in April. Please try to avoid scheduling any appointments or school absences during the testing dates. We appreciate your help and the encouragement you can provide your child. Please watch for more detailed information to come from your child/ren’s teacher.
Please mark your calendars for the following events in March:
· February 27-March 3: Read Across America Week – please watch your child’s classroom newsletter, DOJO, Remind, etc. to see what our dress up days and events will be!
· March 1: Spring pictures (Order forms must accompany student as they are only taking pictures for those that wish to purchase a packet.)
· March 10: End of 3rd quarter
· March 12: Daylight Saving Time (turn your clocks ahead one hour)
· March 14: Culver’s Night for LO (5-8pm) – drive thru, carry-out or dine-in
· March 23: Report cards go home with your child
· March 16 & 17: Spring Break – No school
· March 20: Professional Development Day – No school
· March 28 & 30: Kindergarten Jumpstart – please call the school if you have a child who will be 5 years old by Sept. 1 and you have not received information. We look forward to meeting your future Longfellow Lion!
· March 31: LO BINGO Night (this is our rescheduled date)
We had excellent participation in our One School One Book project: Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Our Lions were so eager to view the guest reader videos and be a part of this community-based reading project. A special thank you to our Title I teachers: Mrs. Gubbrud, Mrs. Schramm, and Miss Meyers for organizing our event. We are looking forward to hosting another OSOB project in the future.
Think Spring!

March Lunch Menu
Hi!
Longfellow’s Scholastic Book Fair was another success! Thank you to everyone who stopped by!
The library is preparing for the Iditarod race and Tank (Longfellow’s stuffed sled dog) is anxiously ready to race! The teachers will be picking a musher to represent their class. We will be tracking all mushers throughout the real Iditarod race. Tank will also be roaming the school and stopping to spend some time in the classroom whose musher is currently in first place.
The IDITAROD is a dog sled race that occurs every year in Alaska. It is 998 miles long and it is run by a musher and their team of dogs. It starts on March 5th and we are excited for it to begin!
There will be more excitement in the library later in the month of March so stay tuned!!! 😊

Title: Wonder
We chose this as our favorite book because of the message. The message of Wonder is no matter who you are or what you've been given, you fit in just as much as the person next to you."

Title: Who You Were Made to Be
Our class chose the book "Who You Were Made To Be" by Joanna Gaines. We chose this book because it inspired each of us to use our unique talents and skills to be the best that we can be. The message really stuck to us because it encourages you to be true to yourself because that's who the world needs you to be.
4O-Miss Osthus
Title: Dog Driven
We've enjoyed learning about the Iditarod and seeing it from the perspective of the characters in this book. The characters have both happy and sad emotions that we are able to relate to. It brings an entertaining light onto dog sledding. The sisters persist through challenges they face along the way. We haven't finished it yet, but we are excited to see what continues to happen along the journey!
