October PTA Things You Need to Know
A Message From Our Principal
Health & Safety Week!
We’re so excited for this year’s PTA Health and Safety Week! It’s going to be a fun-filled week with daily themes that let the kids dress up while learning important health and safety tips. From internet safety to kindness, each day brings a new adventure as we explore how to stay safe in our community. We can’t wait to see the creativity and excitement as the students participate in all the activities, making health and safety both educational and fun!
School Counselor Anti-Bullying Lesson
IF THERE’S SOMETHING STRANGE…. IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WHO YA GONNA CALL?
School Counselors!!
IF THERE’S SOMETHING WEIRD…. AND IT DON’T LOOK GOOD, WHO YA GONNA CALL?
School Counselors!!
For the month of October, Mrs. Garrison and her staff visited each class to discuss bullying prevention with the Ghostbuster theme. Students learned about the differences between rude, mean, and bullying behaviors. Malicious behaviors were specifically addressed for students in grades 4-6, which included retaliation for reporting.
They used dry ice and water as a visual metaphor to make a foggy substance they labeled as kindness and compassion. They walked around the room and gave examples of what safe, kind, and respectful looked like. They encouraged the students to spread their own kindness around the school to make this school the best in the valley!
Please help teach your child that we never see individuals as rude, mean, or bullies, but rather it’s the behavior that we label. Encourage your child to also be assertive and stand up for others who may need their help. We don’t want anyone to be haunted later by their own problem behaviors or their inability to stand up and help someone.
Students in 4-6th grade may be hesitant to speak up about bullying for several reasons. They can now use a new self-reporting tool. Below is the tool they can use located in front of the counselor's office. We will reach out to them afterwards to provide support in the way the student wants us to contact them.
Let’s work together to keep Sunrise a safe and welcoming place for all!
