Cornerstones: Teamwork & Learning

From Good to Great: Moving the Flywheel
In Good to Great, Jim Collins shares how some businesses successfully made the leap from being good companies to truly great companies. One key principle from his study is that these companies engaged in daily disciplined efforts focused on doing the right work: an effect he compares to overcoming the inertia of a flywheel:
"Pushing with great effort, you get the flywheel to inch forward, moving almost imperceptibly at first. You keep pushing and, after two or three hours of persistent effort, you get the flywheel to complete one entire turn. You keep pushing, and the flywheel begins to move a bit faster, and with continued great effort, you move it around a second rotation.
You keep pushing in a consistent direction. Three turns ... four ... five ... six ... the flywheel builds up speed ... seven ... eight ... you keep pushing ... nine ... ten ... it builds momentum ... eleven ... twelve ... moving faster with each turn ... twenty ... thirty ... fifty ... a hundred.
Then, at some point—breakthrough! The momentum of the thing kicks in in your favor, hurling the flywheel forward, turn after turn ... whoosh! ... its own heavy weight working for you. You’re pushing no harder than during the first rotation, but the flywheel goes faster and faster. Each turn of the flywheel builds upon work done earlier, compounding your investment of effort."
On Monday, teachers from every school in D93 met together to work on identifying essential learning outcomes in common subject areas in every grade level. This is the first time in the history of our District that all teachers in every school have engaged in this this level of collaboration. The amount of work our teachers accomplished in those few hours is a testament to the principle of the flywheel. The disciplined work our teachers have done in their schools during Monday collaboration time over the past several years created the necessary momentum for meaningful and productive collaboration across the District this week.
Thank you for your support for this invaluable time for our teachers. It is essential to our work to truly design success for every student.
