This whakatauki links to the Macleans Value of Resilience well as we should always look for answers/solutions to problems and never give up!
Macleans Primary School Community
Hello Everyone
We do hope the month of March has been going well for everyone. As we move into the latter part of the term, I am announcing some changes that we had set in place ,but unfortunately due to MoE circumstances out of our control, we have had to review some dates. We have had to make changes to our Teacher Only Days this year and add a third, meaning we have to open the school one more day for instruction. These dates are detailed below in the body of the newsletter.
In term 2, our home-school partnership continues with the learning conferences, parent sessions on 'how we teach literacy' and the 'open classrooms'. We are finalising the structure around sending a book or two home soon so please keep an eye out for details.
Thanks to all the parents of Y6 students who have made their respective EOTC camp payments. Please contact me here at Macleans Primary if we need to discuss different payment options.
The Swimming competitions were great fun this week. The Y1-Y3 fun swim was held in much better weather conditions than the Y4-Y6. Fortunately we were able to squeeze in the Y4-Y6 activities with much house cheer. Thanks to all the parents who attended and helped :))
Please note the final newsletter of the term will be in 3 weeks time - Wednesday 9 April. Likely a few notices within the next 3 weeks, however.
We received notice the other day that from Monday 28 April to Wednesday 30 April the Education Review Office (ERO) will be at Macleans Primary School. ERO reviews schools regularly (Macleans was last reviewed in 2019). ERO aims to understand and share how each early childhood service, kōhanga reo, school or kura achieves positive outcomes for all its learners/ākonga. ERO helps services, kōhanga reo, schools and kura evaluate and improve their own practice. They take an evidence-based approach to reviews. ERO reviewers work with services, kōhanga reo, schools and kura to make independent judgements based on evidence and evaluation indicators. They focus on equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners/ākonga. ERO's approach is driven by our whakataukī: Ko te Tamaiti te Pūtake o te Kaupapa | The Child – the Heart of the Matter. Macleans Primary School welcomes the support that ERO offers schools. More to share on ERO in the next newsletter.
Regular and consistent Student attendance is one of the Ministry of Education's goals. At Macleans Primary our attendance rates are very good. Please continue to support your child arriving at school on time (but not before 8.30) with all the necessary 'tools' for learning.
Enjoy the content in this newsletter as there is definitely much of Macleans Primary to celebrate and share in this newsletter!

Health Education
Health education at Macleans Primary School supports our objectives to ensure students are able to achieve their highest possible standard in educational achievement, and to ensure the school is a safe and inclusive place for all students and staff. We comply with legislative requirements for the development and delivery of health education, including:
- adopting a health curriculum delivery statement in consultation with the school community at least once every two years
- providing supervision if release from specific parts of health education is required.
Community consultation
As required by the Education and Training Act 2020, the board consults with the school community about how the health curriculum is implemented (s 91).
We consult with parents of students enrolled at the school. The consultation process may also include other people the board considers to be part of our school community.
Consultation process
The board prepares a draft statement on the delivery of the health curriculum, or may delegate this responsibility to the principal, and shares the draft statement with the school community. The board may use any method of consultation that it considers fit for purpose. The aim of consultation is to:
- determine the health education needs of our students
- inform the school community about the content of the health curriculum
- receive feedback from the school community about how the health curriculum should be implemented.

Student Leaders: Grip Leadership Conference
Primary & Intermediate Student Leader Conference was held on Monday this week. All of our student leaders focussed on their role as school leaders and what they can do to enhance their leadership at Macleans Primary School. Student leaders left the conference with a clear vision, a solid understanding and dozens of ideas for their time as a leader at Macleans Primary School and beyond. GRIPS core values align with Macleans Primary's Values core values of respect, Responsibility & Cooperation. These are:
GENEROSITY: Willingness to use what you have been given (time and resources) on behalf of those you seek to influence.
RESPONSIBILITY: We all have a responsibility to develop what we have and help others to live well.
INTEGRITY: A commitment to truth and honesty in dealings.
PEOPLE: Every human being is of great significance, and has a purpose to fulfil.
2025 Cricket Team
For the past two years Macleans Primary were the best Primary School at Cricket in the Howick-Pakuranga Area. Could we repeat in 2025? Last Wednesday, the second day of the cricket competition, we won all three of our games. We will find out soon if we have made it to the next round.
Children Arriving at School
Please do not drop off children on a school day before 8.30. Children can go into their classrooms from 8.30 and be fully supervised; before this time it is a challenge for teachers to offer supervision. Our before and after-school childcare providers SKIDS can provide care for your child before school. Details below and link to SKIDS website HERE.

A Message From The Library
Hauora
Hauora is well-being. Hauora is a Māori philosophy of health unique to Aotearoa. It comprises of 4 parts (see below). At Macleans Primary our Values link and align with Hauora. We endeavour that in all we do at Macleans Primary has an underpinning of Hauora, from, our day to day interactions between children and adults and the strategic direction of the school.
Taha tinana (the physical dimension): Physical wellbeing as well as the physical body, its growth, development, and ability to move, and ways of caring for it.
Taha hinengaro (the mental dimension): Mental and emotional wellbeing including coherent thinking processes, acknowledging and expressing thoughts and feelings, and responding constructively.
Taha whānau (the family dimension): Social wellbeing exploring family relationships, friendships, and other interpersonal relationships; feelings of belonging, compassion, and caring; and social support.
Taha wairua (the spiritual dimension): Spiritual wellbeing and the values and beliefs that determine the way people live, the search for meaning and purpose in life, and personal identity and self-awareness. (For some individuals and communities, spiritual wellbeing is linked to a particular religion; for others, it is not.).
**Please note that we DO NOT teach 'religion' and 'spiritualness'**
Each of these four dimensions of Hauora influences and supports the others.
