Dear Coyote Families,

We've had another Great Week at Canyon View Elementary! This week, our fifth grade classes had the opportunity to visit BizTown. BizTown is Junior Achievement’s experiential-based program where students have the opportunity to participate in a simulated community. Another highlight of the week was our Our Coyote Choir Winter Concert on December 4th, coupled with an evening of dine-outs.

During the week ahead, our students will enjoy an assembly on Tuesday, to celebrate the Giving Tree fundraiser and enjoy a the choral music performance by Second Grade. Students will have VAPA on Thursday, and we end the week with Family Bingo night on Friday!

Make the holidays brighter and less stressful! Tina Campbell, Writer, and Chaos Coordinator will be speaking on the topic Tools to Find JOY in Your Family's Busy Seasons. Learning objectives include identifying the stressors and embracing the love of the season, obligations vs. celebrations, gift giving and receiving conversations, etc.

E-Bike Safety Class for Students & Parents

We are excited to announce the upcoming E-Bike Class for students and their parent(s)/guardian(s), aimed at promoting safe and responsible e-bike usage. The class will take place in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Mt. Carmel High School on Wednesday, January 8th at 6:00 pm. Attendees are highly encouraged to arrive at 5:30 pm so they have enough time to find parking at the PAC.

Planning for our 3rd Annual STEAM Fest is officially underway! The Canyon View Foundation is pleased to host this event on Friday, January 24th. This year's event will be in the evening from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm and will feature hands-on activities and demonstrations. We invite you to save the date for this family-friendly event!

Earlier this month in the Canyon View Library, students learned about the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, recognized each year on December 3. Established by the United Nations in 1992, this global event seeks to build awareness and improve the lives of the estimated 1.3 billion people experiencing a significant disability (this represents 16% of the world’s population, or 1 in 6 of us.) We hope that these picture books will help continue the conversation around empathy and consideration for those with disabilities.

Last week, some classes read the book Janine. by Maryann Cocca-Leffler, introducing us to the author’s real-life daughter Janine Leffler who has cerebral palsy and overcame exclusion while in school. Now a grown woman, Janine and her mother have co-written a nonfiction picture book about the 1972 case Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia and how it led to the ruling that all disabled children would receive a free public education. Janine Leffler was able to attend public school because of this ruling.

Told in Janine’s voice, this informative book tells more of her story and highlights the importance of accessible education for all.

What happened to you? Was it a shark? A burglar? A lion? Did it fall off? A boy named Joe is trying to play pirates at the playground, but he keeps being asked what happened to his leg. Bombarded with questions and silly suggestions, Joe becomes more and more fed up...until the kids finally understand they don't need to know what happened. And that they’re wasting valuable playtime!

Based on the author’s real childhood experiences, this honest, funny, and authentic picture book is an empowering read for anyone with a disability, and for young readers learning how best to address differences.

This book is a colorful exploration of all the ways that people navigate through the spaces around them and a celebration of the relationships we build along the way! We Move Together follows a mixed-ability group of kids as they creatively negotiate everyday barriers and find joy and connection in disability culture and community. A perfect tool for families to facilitate conversations about disability, accessibility, social justice and community building, this kid-friendly story also includes informative background material for older students and grown-ups as well.

The Green Cone Zone: The Green Cone Zone is reserved for students in Ms. Dobson, Ms. Marty, Ms. Morrison or Ms. Ruble's students who need extra assistance loading and unloading. Please keep these areas clear so that our special needs families have a safe place to load and unload their children.

Please read through the information below about Parking. Parking in our school lot is extremely limited and we need everyone's help to ensure a safe and efficient drop-off and pick-up. Please refrain from parking in the lot unless you are picking up a PreK, TK or Kindergarten student, or you have business in the front office. Instead, use our supervised drop-off/pick-up curb to the west of the front office.

• Attention TK/K Families: You are not required to park and walk students to the gate for drop-off. Use our drive-through drop-off instead. We have supervision from the curb to the blacktop from 8:20 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Please continue to park and pick-up from the gate at dismissal.
• Attention Grade 1-5 Families: Do not park in the lot for drop-off or pick-up. Instead, use the supervised drive-through pick-up curb west of the office. This allows sufficient parking for our staff, and TK/Kindergarten families.
• Curbside Drop-off/Pick-Up: Use our designated drop-off/pick-up area to the west of the office only. Do not ask your child to meet you anywhere else in the lot. While this might seem faster for you, it slows down our system for everyone and creates a safety hazard.
