Claypit Hill News and More
February 4, 2025
Hello Claypit Caregivers,
We hope you are staying warm during this truly chilly winter. While winter provides our trees and all things green a period of dormancy, life inside an elementary school is just the opposite. The winter months are often among the most productive. In the fall, our educators work to establish classroom communities and routines that ready children for the risk taking and academic rigor in the year ahead. In recent days, our classrooms have been like hives. Our students have been hard at work. Teachers are engaging them in deep learning paired with meaningful assessment. This Thursday, you'll be able to view your child's first semester report card. This is a wonderful opportunity to notice and celebrate the areas where your student is thriving. Be mindful that our report card standards are end of year standards meaning that most students will not achieve proficiency until the end of the year. Some of the standards have not been addressed yet and as such, have not been assessed. Please do your very best to focus on what your child can do and the growth you notice. March conferences provide an opportunity to come into school to discuss your child's progress in greater detail. We strongly recommend you set aside time for these important conferences.
In the meantime, please encourage your child to read at home. Don't be discouraged if your child is reading books that you think are too easy. This kind of reading builds confidence and stamina. Over time your reader will be ready for new challenges. We also encourage you to read to your child whenever you can no matter their grade. Reading together sends the message that reading and spending time together is important to you. Hearing their favorite stories in their loved one's voice will make this time that much more entertaining and memorable. Take advantage of any opportunity to use math recreationally with your child. Whether baking or estimating the length of a trip, try to integrate math into your daily conversations. There are many truly fun math games on the market. Game play is a wonderful way to bring joy to math learning while also building fluency. You are your child's first and most important teacher. Ensure that everyone puts away their technology for periods of time every day in favor of talking as a family. These conversations are opportunities to pass along your values or explore a science topic that is interesting to your child. Fostering curiosity is one of the best ways to support an elementary student!
We feel truly fortunate to be partnering in the important work of educating your children. It really is an honor. Please reach out to us at any time with questions or concerns you may have. Meanwhile, stay warm! In just 6 weeks we'll be welcoming in spring weather, right?
Sincerely,
Marie, Kate, and Naomi
Science Fair and STEAM Discovery Night
Everyone is invited to the Science Fair and STEAM Discovery Night is 5-7pm THIS Wed ⅖! Bring the family for a fun science evening - kids can share science fair projects (on any topic that inspires them) and enjoy interactive activity stations featuring experts on this year’s theme: Weather!
Order pizza and/or sign-up to volunteer during the event - Pizza orders are due by 2/4 and we need volunteer help with set-up, handing out pizza, talking with kids about their projects (visiting scientists), taking photos and cleaning up. Thank you!
We’re thrilled to have several weather experts (A meteorologist, storm chaser, MIT Lincoln Lab team and NE Sci Tech) lined up to share their expertise with our kids both at the Science Fair as well as during bonus in-class weather science sessions in early February!
Thanks!
STEAM team (April, Elaine, Gigi, Heather and Janice)
Absences and Tardies
We just passed the 1/2 way mark on the 2024-25 school year. It is a good time to take note of your child's total tardies and absences. In the next week or two we will send letters home to notify families when a child has been tardy 30+ times. Receiving such a letter will mean that your child has been tardy greater than 1/3 of the school year to date. You'd be astounded by just how many children fall into this category.
Being tardy to school is a difficult way for your child to start their day. Entering a classroom where learning or even a morning meeting is already happening can be very difficult for some children. At the very least, it is disruptive to the learning going on. The teacher and students already engaged in learning will have to pause as your child gets settled in and joins the group.
If your child has 6 or more absences, they are in great danger of being considered chronically absent unless their attendance patterns improve. Please do not plan family trips during the school year. We only get 180 days to build relationships and create meaningful learning experiences. We don't want to miss out on a single day!
As a reminder: Classes begin at 7:55. Students are marked tardy when they arrive after 8:00 a.m.
Wayland Kindergarten Pre-Registration
February 1 - 14, 2025
Families with children that will be 5 years of age by August 31, 2025 may pre-register their child(ren) for Kindergarten for the 2025-2026 school year.
The pre-registration link will be accessible on the Kindergarten Information website starting February 1, 2025. We request that you pre-register your child by February 14, 2025 so that we may start to determine school placement, class size, and transportation needs for the incoming Kindergarteners. NO registration documents are needed at this time.
Notes:
Families interested in the Spanish Immersion Kindergarten program still need to pre-register their Kindergarteners.
Families unsure of their Kindergarten enrollment decision at this time may still pre-register.
From the Library
Congratulations to this year's school winners of the Massachusetts School Library Association Bookmark contest.
First place entries have been submitted to the state contest.
Good luck and thank you to over 100 students who participated!
Please encourage your child to ride the bus in the a.m.!
There are many reasons to encourage your child to ride the bus into school.
- It is an opportunity to chit chat with friends. In this digital age, socialization in the absence of any technology is a great opportunity to develop and practice essential skills.
- You ALWAYS get to school on time on the bus!
- You get to play outside with friends for ten minutes before school when the weather is nice! That equals 10 minutes of extra RECESS!
- You can hang inside with friends when the weather is really cold (feels like 20 degrees or colder).
- Having less cars dropping off will give families who do not qualify for the bus to drop off on time with greater ease!
Help the Wayland Girl Scouts!
Please help Wayland Girl Scouts to support families in Southern California while they rebuild and recover form the devastating wildfires. All proceeds will go directly to Girl Scouts of Greater LA county (via GSUSA) who in turn, will allocate the funds directly to impacted families for much needed resources. Wayland girl scouts will collect venmo (venmo: @troop84375) and cash donations until 2/14/25. Brownie Troop 84375 will also be accepting cash donations at Claypit Hill School this Friday, February 7, from 7:4 5- 8:00am am. Please consider donating.
2025 Backpack Auction
Planning for the 2025 Backpack Auction has begun! The auction is the second (of two) fundraising events that directly supports all of Wayland’s elementary schools. The auction (to take place in March) has historically had a huge response across families and the Wayland community and we hope it lives up to its reputation in 2025! Our goal is to identify thoughtful and exciting bidding items to make this year’s auction a success!
That’s where YOU come in!
Please consider donating any of the following to the auction:

Did you know: The funding we raise for the PTO this year determines our 2025-26 budget and directly impacts what we’re able to do for our students next year--think of the back-to-school picnic, incredible field trips, and all of the other wonderful enrichment opportunities that the PTO enables through your generous support.

23rd Annual SOUPer Bowl of Caring
Everyone is invited to bring in canned food items (or cereal, peanut butter, applesauce or other nonperishable food items) to help fill up the shelves at My Brother’s Table food pantry. MCAS Dates are Finalized
The MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) provides districts with a testing window. We have scheduled our assessments late in the window to provide for as much time for teaching and learning as possible before the assessments. As a result, there is little time provided for make up tests. It is imperative that travel not be scheduled during the MCAS testing days. Please support our school by planning accordingly.
