OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
VFW Patriot Pen Contest and Teacher of the Year
VFW Post 724 is partnering with the Mounds View School District again this year for the VFW Patriot Pen contest and Teacher of the Year.
The 2024-25 theme is "My Voice in America's Democracy?"
The Patriot Ben Contest and Teacher of the Year program official entry forms and rules can be found here. The winning entries from 2023-24 are also located at this link. New this year, the student's teacher/coordinator staff member will be invited to the award banquets, if their student is invited.
Each year, nearly 68,800 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of nearly $1 million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000!
The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Before submitting your essay, download the 2024-2025 entry form here and find your sponsoring local VFW Post as applications must be turned in by midnight, Thursday, October 31.
Patriot Pen (PP)
1. Prize money per school:
First place: $100
Second Place: $ 75
Third Place: $ 50
2. Post award of $50 to the highest scoring entry from all PP entries.
3. For the PP, VFW Post 724 can advance 1 per 15 student packets to the Mn 4th District. If a student’s entry advances to the MN 4th District, VFW Post 724 will purchase up to three (3) dinner tickets for the student and guests to attend the MN 4th District Award Dinner, usually the first weekend in December. Also, if a student’s entry advances to the MN 4th District, they will be asked for a photo for their packet.
4. VFW Post 724 will also invite the Teacher/Staff liaison to the MN 4th District Award Dinner for any student that advances to the 4th District.
5. Completed PP typed essay and completed entry form must be submitted prior to October 31st to a representative of VFW Post 724.

Every candidate nominated for Teacher of the Year will receive $100 and up to two (2) tickets to attend the MN 4th District Award Dinner, usually the first weekend in December. Teacher of the year is divided into three groups: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Each school can nominate one teacher per group per year.
Completed Teacher of the Year packets must be submitted prior to October 31st to a representative of VFW Post 724. VFW Post 724 will forward all completed packets directly to the MN Department of the VFW. The MN VFW Teacher of the Year is awarded at the VFW Mid-Winter Conference.

After-School Coaches Needed
Community Ed is in need of coaches for our upcoming Fall after-school sports. We are currently hiring coaches for Tennis, Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, and Volleyball. We like to have one coach per 10 students, and we pay $30/hr. The program runs 1.25 hrs per day Mon-Thursday from 2:30-3:40 pm. You DO NOT need a lot of experience in coaching. This program is not competitive and it is a great opportunity for kids to try out a sport. If we don't have coaches we cannot run the program.
If you are interested in finding out more about coaching, please contact our Community Ed Coordinator, Deb Fjeld at deb.fjeld@moundsviewschools.org. Thank you for your consideration.
Fall Community Ed After-School Activities
Please see the links below to find out more about the after school activities available beginning Monday, September 16. Register ASAP to ensure programs have enough students to begin.
