Principal's Corner
Ray Marshall, Principal
Hello Willow Crest Families!
Thank you for all of your hard work these past 3 Quarters. As we start Quarter 4, I want to encourage all families to read as much as possible and enjoy the outdoors.
We will continue the AK Star Assessments (Alaska System of Academic Readiness) in English Language Arts (3-6th), Math (3-6th), and Science (5th grade). Testing began Tuesday, March 26th and will run through the next few weeks. It is important that students get plenty of rest and a solid breakfast for them to be at their best.
As always, thank you for making sure students arrive on time. School starts at 10:00 on Mondays, and 9:00am Tuesday-Fridays.

Social Academic Emotional Behavioral Risk Screener
SAEBRS Spring Screening Window
Just a reminder that we are in the Spring screening window for our school-wide behavior screener. The teacher rating scale is used to assess various risk factors for each student in their classroom to determine students as risk for behavior. The screening will be used to help us look at the effectiveness of our schoolwide and classroom structures as well as what additional supports that students might need. This screening is completed by teachers and will not take away from instructional time nor require input/answers from students. If you have any questions, please contact the school’s administrator.
ASD Wellness Initiative at Willow Crest
Dear Willow Crest Families,
I want to let you know about an exciting initiative that is taking place in our school that has the potential to help improve school lunches and the health of your child. ASD has partnered with the University of Alaska in a study that is looking at longer lunch periods, longer recesses, and more movement breaks throughout the day. This set of policies (called the Wellness Initiative) is not in all ASD elementary schools yet, but all schools can participate in the study. The study will look at the amount of food eaten by students who eat a hot lunch and the amount of exercise students get.
If you and your child agree to participate, your child can get up to $100 for being in this study.
More details about how to participate in this study can be found at this link: https://redcap.link/ne0yv1cp
Information will also be sent home with your child. Thank you for considering helping us learn more about ASD’s Wellness Initiative!

Instructional/Behavior Coach
A Message from Coach Karen
These next few weeks we will be finishing up AK Star Testing for students in grades 3-6. We got off to a great start last week and look to keep this momentum moving forward! Please help support your child perform their best on this state summative assessment by ensuring they have a good nights sleep and a healthy breakfast.
Nurse's Corner
A Message From Nurse Pam
Start planning for the end of the school year:
If your student has medications in the nurse's office, they will need to be picked up by an adult by 3:30pm on the last student day, Wednesday, May 22nd. Any medications left will be disposed of per ASD policy in compliance with the DEA and federal law.
Also, for end of year celebrations, please remember that ASD supports a latex-reduced environment. If planning for balloons, please bring mylar, not latex balloons. Thank you!
A Message From Ms. Lindsey
It has been busy around here as we are entering a time of year that brings a lot of change. Spring is a time of change for everyone as the days are getting longer with the sunlight returning, snow is finally melting but also aggravatingly still coming, and green things starting to appear. This also can be a time of year when our kids are anticipating lots of personal changes. Summer can be a really fun time, but also can be hard for kids who love structure and coming to school! They are also leaving a classroom of friends and a teacher they know, while anticipating a new classroom, new teacher, new grade, and for some even a new school in the fall. Please be gentle with them and with yourselves as we all navigate these changes together.
In our counselor lessons this month, we will be focusing on the transition to middle school for our 5th and 6th graders, and change in general for the younger grades. As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. My email address is hibbert_lindsay@asdk12.org and I’m at the school on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
